Lansdowne Friends School seeks a full-time 5th/6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher to begin in September of 2022. They will teach combined 5/6 Language Arts and Social Studies classes and work in close collaboration with the 5/6 Math and Science teacher to ensure a vibrant and engaging program for the oldest students in our school. This includes coordinating graduation, service opportunities, leadership experiences, and day and overnight field trips. The teaching load for this position is about a 3/4 position.
To make the position a full-time one, and to meet an important need, this role also includes serving as the Middle School Placement Coordinator for our 6th graders and their families. This includes ensuring that all facets of the middle school admission process are implemented, including ongoing communication with and support of families, organization of admission events, collaboration with other LFS administrators and teachers, interactions with receiving middle school admission personnel, and direct work with students about this important transition to 7th grade.
Key qualities and qualifications sought include:
- A bachelor’s degree in elementary or middle school education or in a subject area (master’s preferred)
- Three or more years of experience as a lead teacher for this age group, preferably in a progressive and/or Quaker independent school
- Experience teaching balanced literacy and the writing process
- Passion for teaching social studies, with a focus on anti-racism and social justice
- Familiarity with the Responsive Classroom approach to building class community
- Experience in developing and leading service projects that connect to the curriculum and/or that engage students in issues related to the environment and/or social justice
- Ability to form trusting and positive relationships with students
- Collaborative approach to working with children and colleagues
- Interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational and technology skills, such as Google Suites, Zoom, and student information systems
- Integrity, curiosity, flexibility, and strong work ethic
- Interest in being part of a collaborative professional culture
- Affinity with Quaker values and the mission of Lansdowne Friends School
