Head of School
Inveniam viam aut faciam or “I will find a way or make one.”
The Holton-Arms School seeks a dynamic, community-centered, and administratively accomplished Head of School to lead a preeminent independent school boldly into the future, continuing to prioritize student-centered pedagogy, academic excellence, and a culture that prizes joy, compassion, and the individuality of every student. The successful candidate must have a proven track record as a galvanizing leader, enthusiastic fund raiser, and inspirational role model in complex and diverse institutional environments.
Founded in 1901, Holton-Arms is an independent college-preparatory school for girls in grades 3-12 dedicated to the “education not only of the mind, but of the soul and spirit.” Holton-Arms encourages young women to approach the world with unflinching curiosity and a sense of responsibility to use what they learn for the greatest good. Situated on a verdant campus in Bethesda, Maryland, Holton is a vibrant place where students are deeply engaged in the process of learning, and where they are challenged and nurtured, developing self-confidence and building self-esteem, throughout their academic journey. Holton’s motto, "I will find a way or make one," inspires students to be great leaders in our complex and changing world. There are 175 faculty and staff and 665 students on campus in the 2021-2022 academic year.
The incoming Head of School will lead a thriving educational community to the next level of excellence. In close collaboration with all of Holton’s key stakeholders, they will develop a strategic plan that sets a unifying vision and distinct priorities for the School’s future, making clear the value proposition of a Holton education. The Head will work to strengthen communication across the Holton community, forging relationships built on trust and transparency with students, parents, faculty and staff, alumnae, and trustees. As chief executive, they will effectively work with the Board to manage the School’s finances while growing the fundraising profile and philanthropic successes. Holton has had a long-demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the new Head must champion these priorities, and further the important work of creating a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive school community. Internally, the Head will assess the current administrative structure to ensure it optimizes efficiency, cohesion, and clarity, and strengthen systems related to cross-divisional leadership and support. The Head will work in partnership with the Board of Trustees to accomplish all of the above thereby positioning the School to reach even greater heights.
