ESLA’s music program in the VAPA Department aims to activate the inner musician in every student, through daily practice of listening and performing. Both ESLA’s Upper and Middle School music curricula are ensemble-based, culminating in a Winter and Spring Concert. Students explore instrument knowledge and basics, practice ear training, performance technique and etiquette. Semester courses are built around a shared theme, typically geographic or temporal: 70s Soul, 100 Years of California. Many students enter a music class at ESLA with no previous instrumentation knowledge, and leave with an appreciation for and ability to participate in an ensemble.
