Job Summary:
Catlin Gabel, a nationally recognized progressive preschool-12, independent day school in Portland, Oregon, seeks an innovative, experienced, and educator to serve as a one-year Interim Head of Middle School. The Interim Middle School Head will lead a dynamic learning community of 190 students in grades six, seven, and eight and 30 faculty and staff members who prepare students for ongoing education and life for the 2022-2023 school year. This is a unique opportunity to join students and teachers who joyfully and actively engage together in creating a learning community.
The Interim Middle School Head is a senior administrator position, working closely with the Assistant Head of School, fellow division heads, and the senior leadership team to guide the work of the division for the year. Ideally, the Interim Middle School Head is an experienced middle years educator who understands the value and complexity of middle school, committed to equity, a compassionate leader and relationship builder, skilled in forming authentic and empathetic relationships with diverse communities. The goal of this interim position is to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and families during the year to help ensure a smooth transition to a new Middle School Head for the 2023-2024 school year.
Salary: $115,000-$125,000

Job Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with faculty and staff to value and support the importance of middle school education
- Oversees the development, alignment, and evaluation of curriculum in collaboration with the instructional leadership team of the school
- Hires faculty and coordinates faculty duties in and out of the classroom
- Directs the professional learning and evaluation programs for all Middle School faculty and staff and specific cross-divisional faculty
- Partners with the Director of Equity and Inclusion and faculty to promote an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum, community, and culture in the Middle School
- Maintains open communication with parents and guardians through regular meetings with families, Parent Faculty Association groups, and written information and presentations
- Oversees the development of the Middle School schedule and allocation of learning, social, and play spaces
- Develops and maintains community expectations designed to reinforce positive and respectful student behavior
- Supervises preparation, planning, and enrollment in student courses and programs
- Prepares and controls divisional budget; participates in and contributes to all-school budget discussions and decisions
- Directs and supervises safety policies and practices for Middle School students, faculty, and staff
- Works with the Director of Enrollment Management, faculty, and prospective families to ensure a diverse and well-qualified student body in the Middle School
- Partners with Division Heads and the Enrollment Management team to ensure effective student transitions, retention, and placement
- Shares responsibility with other Division Heads for faculty evaluation, curriculum, and school programs, on and off campus, during and outside the school day
- Supervises or coordinates other educational or personnel matters delegated by the Assistant Head of School or Head of School

- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- At least seven years of experience in a school environment
- At least two years of supervisory/management/coaching experience
- Knowledge of progressive education and experience as a teacher and administrator in grades 6-8 is desirable
- Experience in navigating challenging conversations about sensitive issues
