Learning Specialist and Classroom Teaching Position

Burke Mountain Academy is seeking a passionate, energetic professional for the 2022-23 school year to lead the Learning Center and join the faculty, teaching a humanities based elective course. The Learning Support Tutorial at Burke Mountain Academy is designed to help all students become active participants in their academic careers. One-on-one time with the Learning Specialist is a resource for students who have documented learning differences or are English as a second language students. These students will meet with the Learning Specialist to discuss diagnoses and strategies that the student currently uses to be successful in the classroom. From there, the Learning Specialist works with the student to analyze the effectiveness of the strategies used and to incorporate new strategies if necessary. The ultimate goal of the LS Tutorial is to meet students where they are at and to help them develop the skills that are necessary to be independently successful in their future academic endeavors. The elective course will be taught to a class of 10-12 juniors and seniors with flexibility in topics explored.
Responsibilities
- Building supportive, trusting relationships with students.
- Helping students develop effective learning and executive functioning strategies that promote academic improvement.
- Educating and updating parents and teachers regularly about students' progress including accommodation plans
- Reading neuropsych testing documents and identifying the proper interventions for students and assessing students to identify those who have learning differences.
- Applying for accommodations on standardized tests (SAT /ACT)
- Coordinating all school standardized testing (SAT / ACT / PSAT)
- Keeping up to date with new developments in teaching methods and educational psychology
- Teaching one full year elective course for junior and senior level students
- Provide narrative-based feedback for students
- Build class curriculum on Canvas, our learning management system
- Participate in weekly faculty meeting and collaborate with a small faculty team to create project-based and experiential learning curriculum across all courses
- Advise approximately four students
- Perform requisite number of weekday and weekend duties required of all faculty and staff
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education or related field and at least one year of high school teaching experience
