Position Title: Lower School, Art Instructor, 30 hours per week (eligible for most benefits)
Department: Lower School
Reports To: Head of the Lower School
FLSA: Exempt
Position Purpose: The Lower School Art Instructor is responsible for preparing curriculum, teaching Art at the lower school level, and creating a dynamic learning environment for students in the class.
Essential Functions
- Plan daily classroom work based on curriculum requirements, and teach art to Lower School students.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Ability to demonstrate strong classroom management and studio structures.
- Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
- Work with various teams within the school community to plan for and coordinate exhibitions and events throughout the school year both on and off campus.
- Work with theater department to create props and scenery for LS performances.
- Support arts education in all three divisions in order to build a cohesive and dynamic program.
- Collaborate with other arts faculty on the development of the overall arts program.
- Encourage and foster relationships with local and national professional and educational visual arts organizations.
- Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in related subject
- Three years teaching art to young children or related experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of a range of media and art techniques.
- Excellent verbal and written skills with students, colleagues and parents
- Demonstrated organizational skills
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Works in a highly interactive environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment.
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
