Germantown Friends School is seeking a full-time Classics instructor to teach Latin and Ancient Greek across our middle and upper school divisions. There is a long tradition of excellence in Classics learning at GFS, with introductory study in Latin beginning in 7th grade, Greek in the 8th grade, and going as high as Level 5 in both languages. The department has also begun offering seminars and minors on the history of language, ancient culture and archaeology, and mythology, and it teaches elementary linguistics in 6th grade.
The ideal candidate:
- has a strong background in Classics and in instructing students in language learning across 6th- through 12th-grade levels.
- can be a creative, thoughtful collaborator with Classics colleagues in the continual search for innovative ways to educate the whole child.
- is a fluent user of instructional technology.
- is able to convey the social, economic, and cultural diversity of the ancient world.
- has an ability to differentiate instruction and cultivate student growth.
- will work to create and fully support practices of an equitable classroom.
- has lead teaching experience.
Expectations:
- Manage a full teaching load, including teaching during January Term.
- Advise a group of 8-10 students.
- Participate in the life of the school, including required meetings and duties.
- Support the school mission and strategic initiatives.
