Substitute Teacher
In-House Sub / Floating Teacher (Special Education K-12)
The Lang School is a progressive independent school located in lower Manhattan serving grades K-12. Our high potential and gifted learners also have learning challenges, such as ADHD, anxiety, EF difficulties, dyslexia, or high functioning autism.
Twice-exceptional (“2e”) learners have a unique set of social-emotional and intellectual needs. We meet students where they are in both areas of strength and challenge, and we empower them to achieve their next levels of excellence with research-based supports, acceleration, and a robust Talent Development Program.
Our students are both unique and diverse, and we seek out and celebrate diversity in our community — in our identities (race, ethnicity, gender expression, socioeconomic status), as well as our backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
We are looking for a full-time In-House Substitute / Floating Teacher, beginning immediately and continuing for the 2022-2023 school year. The right candidate will be able to provide scheduled Assistant Teacher support across a variety of subjects, as well as provide stand-alone class coverage in the event of a planned or unplanned faculty absence. This teacher will also support students during group activities requiring additional supervision, such as lunch and field trips. When subbing for an absent colleague, this teacher will be responsible for delivering lessons pre-prepared by the absent teacher and for performing baseline classroom duties (e.g., taking attendance and assisting students with work submission).
The ideal candidate will have a range of experience working with students across ages and subjects, thrive in collaborative environments, and be reflective about their work and committed to growth in the profession. We seek teachers who have strong classroom management skills and are fast learners, flexible, and able to both follow (as in, a predesigned lesson plan) and lead (as in, taking initiative to adjust a predesigned lesson plan in the moment, if needed).
Lang faculty enjoy exceptional onsite coaching, ample planning periods each school day, and a strong sense of community support from school leadership to colleagues and parents.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Taking on all duties of an absent teacher, including using classroom management skills to support a class of children;
- Collaborating with the teacher upon their return to share what was accomplished during their absence;
- Working cooperatively with teachers to support and foster age-appropriate activities during specials, academic classes, lunch, and student breaks,
- Building relationships with students and staff;
- Assisting in other schoolwide duties, as assigned;
- Abiding by COVID-19 school regulations for vaccination, masking, and in-house twice-weekly testing (provided at no cost by the school)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with at least a minor in education and a major in a related field (e.g., psychology);
- Willingness to pursue a Masters in Special or Gifted Education is highly preferred;
- Warmth, kindness and compassion to children with a range of needs and ways of expressing those needs;
- Experience teaching and managing children in a structured setting (e.g., school-based, G&T enrichment groups, after-school programs, summer camps, etc.);
- Experience working with neurodiverse populations, such as students with learning profiles that include giftedness, anxiety, ADHD, dyslexia, and ASD;
- Eagerness to collaborate and work as part of a team;
- Commitment to developing research-based skills for working with individual children, small groups, and whole classes;
- Flexibility in managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
Compensation:
Salary is competitive (range is $45k to $65k) and based on credentials and experience. We offer a competitive benefits package, including fully paid health and life insurance, employer-matched 401K, and ample opportunities for paid professional development.
To apply:
Please submit a resume and cover letter specific to our population and program to employment@thelangschool.org. All applicants follow the same process for submitting materials, and we review them using the same lens and rubrics.
