Friends Seminary, an independent Quaker school educating students in grades K-12 in New York City since 1786, seeks a Counselor in the Upper School for a 10-month position, five days per week, beginning August 22, 2022. The Upper School Counselor reports to the Upper School Division Head.

Responsibilities

• Develops presence with students, faculty and parents, and becomes part of the School community
  
• Connects well with children and their families
  
• Serves as member of the Upper School Guidance team and works closely with the Head of Upper School to develop programming for students and respond to individual student needs
  
• Collaborates closely with the Support Services team: Director of Support Services/psychologist, learning specialists and school nurse to promote the physical, social, emotional, educational and health needs of students in Upper School
  
• Meets with students individually and in small groups
  
• Facilitates various support and affinity groups for students, including Banana Splits (children living with one parent for a variety of reasons)
  
• Collaborates with the Director of Diversity, Equity and Belonging as well as the Health Education staff on individual students, programming and teaching of Health and Wellness curriculum
  
• Partner with the Director of Support Services to develop learning plans for students with psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations on file and be able to analyze and communicate test results and recommendations verbally and in writing
  
• Work with teachers, students, administrators, learning specialists and parents to make learning plans useful for students
  
• Initiates and participates in meetings with parents and/or teachers as needed
  
• Attends after school faculty meetings, grade level team meetings and school gatherings 
  
• Sometimes gives presentations or presents case studies
  
• Hosts talks for families about parenting, various mental health issues and child development topics
  
• Collaborates with outside practitioners, including tutors, therapists and evaluators to make referrals and follow up on student care

Qualifications

• Licensed Clinical Social worker (LCSW) or Psychologist (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) with at least 1-3 years post-licensure in either counseling, clinical, school, health, community or a combination of these disciplines 
  
• Seasoned practitioner with experience working in a school or clinical setting with students aged 14-18
  
• Strong public speaking, organization and written communication skills
