Roxbury Academic Support Program Instructor
Cheshire Academy seeks a full-time Roxbury Academic Support Instructor for the upcoming 2022-23 academic year.
The Roxbury Academic Support Program, founded over 20 years ago, is a unique, effective, and individualized approach to supporting students that is supplemental to other support offerings at Cheshire Academy. The goal of the Program is to develop proactive, knowledgeable, and independent learners who take responsibility for their education and academic success as they graduate and transition to college. Roxbury instructors have advanced degrees and professional experience at the secondary or post-secondary levels and are skilled in meeting a range of learning needs. To achieve program goals, instructors are trained in our signature academic coaching model and work one-on-one with students on executive functioning skill building, learning strategies instruction, and ongoing goal-setting and progress monitoring. Close collaboration between and among Roxbury instructors, classroom teachers, parents, dorm parents and the health center is integral in the support of participating students.

A Roxbury instructor understands the mission and goals of the Roxbury Academic Support Program and works independently with Roxbury students on a daily basis. A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in special or general education, as well as the willingness to pursue a master’s degree if entering the position without one.
Specific duties include:
- Work independently with each Roxbury student at the level assigned;
- Implement all components of the Roxbury Academic Coaching Model with fidelity;
- Help students understand themselves as learners, teaching them strategies and skills that will help them to leverage their strengths and best meet and overcome academic challenges;
- Dedicate time to support each student in meeting academic demands and expectations of CA students as well as advocating for students when necessary;
- Document daily student progress and maintain on-going communication with classroom teachers, Roxbury director, and when needed, the Health Center;
- Communicate with parents and caregivers, at least once a week, and more frequently as situations dictate;
- Effectively plan for and with students for each session, understanding that each student requires individual preparation, focus and support.
Shared office responsibilities include:
- Classroom/duty substitute as needed;
- Assisting in classroom management and observations;
- Proctoring exams and/or extra time accommodations;
- Participating in special school activities and events.
Other responsibilities include:
- Advising;
- Coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities;
- Weekend team responsibilities;
- Residential/dormitory duties (if you are a residential faculty member);
- Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain an CT “A” endorsement for purposes of transporting students.
At Cheshire Academy, it is expected that teaching faculty participate in 2 of 3 afternoon coaching seasons. The specific coaching positions that we are looking to fill include:
- Head Golf
- Head Cross Country
- Assistant Football
- Assistant Baseball
- Assistant Softball
- Assistant Track
