Job Title: Lower School Art Teacher - PreK to Grade 5
Division: Lower School
Reports to: Head of Lower School
Summary:
King seeks a highly qualified educator with a desire to bring the joy and skill of art education and conversation to young children in grades PreKindergarten through Grade Five for the 2022-2023 academic year. The successful candidate will ideally hold a degree in elementary art education, have a sound understanding of the developmental needs of lower school students and will have knowledge of a wide range of art media, techniques and art history. The ideal candidate has a desire to promote an appreciation for the visual arts. The ideal candidate must also have proven ability to collaborate with colleagues and parents and have the desire to participate in the life of the school beyond the classroom.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach Pre-Kindergarten (Reggio inspired model) through Grade 5 art classes.
- Develop and adapt the art curricula in collaboration with the fine arts department chair.
- Plan and execute clear, creative, and innovative age appropriate art lessons.
- Teach students to use the creative process and problem-solving skills.
- Guide students to construct works of art using various media.
- Help students to develop a global perspective by connecting art to other subjects and cultures around the world.
- Experience with the use of technology in the classroom.
- Install and frequently rotate student artwork displays.
- Communicate and collaborate with members of the Lower School Faculty on curriculum integration.
- Report on student progress to parents through conferences, reports, and emails, as necessary.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and development.
- Perform duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School, including arrival, recess, lunch, and dismissal.
- Attend Lower School and all-school faculty meetings, as well as workshops on staff development days held after 3:00 P.M.
- Attend Parents’ Night in September/October, Open House etc.
- Chaperone field trips in collaboration with homeroom teachers as part of the instructional program.
- Participate in King’s orientation and mentor programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in Elementary Art Education (master’s degree preferred).
- A minimum of five years of teaching experience in Lower School.
- Experience teaching elementary visual arts and demonstrated excellence in classroom management techniques.
- Familiarity with play-based/inquiry-based learning approaches to teaching.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues.

- Strong capacity in cultural competence; ability to work, learn, and teach in cross-cultural environments.
