The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. The Dalton School seeks a part-time (40%) primarily High School Dance Teacher for the 2022-23 school year. The Dance Department is a cross-divisional department, and most HS teachers periodically teach in the MS. The ideal candidate should have expertise in teaching and choreographing for a variety of ages and skill levels in contemporary, modern, hip-hop, African, African diasporic dance, and other diverse dance forms. As an important member of a cross-divisional Dance Department, this position requires a commitment to collaboration, and active participation in ongoing dance curriculum development and collaborative dance-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach a wide range of dance forms for students at all levels
- Design creative, engaging, and differentiated lessons for Middle and High School students
- Plan assignments and curriculum in collaboration with the dance department; contribute to departmental projects and goals as a team member.
- Engage one-on-one with students for support and enrichment
- Identify students’ strengths/challenges through effective oral and written communication
- Support the mission of The Dalton Dance Department and The Dalton School; implement learning through the Dalton Plan
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Extensive professional dance experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience teaching dance in a school setting
- Diverse range of dance styles and techniques
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
