Do you love providing integrated speech-language therapy services to preschool through elementary school students with special needs? The Gillen Brewer School, a private, special education school on the Upper East Side dedicated to the education of children with challenging, and often multiple disabilities, including language-based and nonverbal learning disabilities, is currently accepting resumes for a full-time, 12-month Speech-Language Pathologist who desires to be a part of an integrated educational/therapeutic team. Summary
The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a critical part of the child’s learning experience at Gillen Brewer. The Speech-Language Pathologist reports to the Head of the Speech-Language Pathology Department who reports to the Assistant Head of School. The SLP will work as part of an integrated team with Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and Psychologists in a therapeutic school setting. Responsibilities include the ability to evaluate and treat students with Speech-Language disorders, formulate individualized treatment programs, keep appropriate records, and inform/collaborate with the therapeutic team and parents regarding the students’ progress. Gillen Brewer expects SLPs to conduct themselves in a professional manner with regard to attire, attitude, participation, communication, and interactions with staff, children, and parents. SLPs are expected to understand the school’s policies, procedures, and guidelines as set in the staff handbook, located on the school’s shared Google Drive. As part of the school community, SLPs are encouraged to participate in school community events, join committees, and create a positive working environment for children, families, and colleagues. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct informal/formal assessment of students as well as implement, update, and create reports
- Create well thought-out therapy sessions, demonstrating an understanding of the student’s individual needs
- Provide sessions across settings based on the individual needs of the students (e.g., pull-out, push-in)
- Support the students’ physical, emotional, sensory, academic, and speech-language needs
- Participate in team meetings
- Follow through with behavioral interventions and supports, recommending visuals and other materials/charts when needed. Provide feedback on effectiveness
- Support teachers with visuals, classroom arrangement, and upkeep
- When schedule allows, provide classroom support as needed
- Recommend and implement therapeutic strategies/programs into the classroom and assist/train the therapeutic team in how to use them
- Collaborate with teachers/therapists to plan and co-lead group activities in the classroom when within your domain
- Co-treat with other therapists purposefully
- Coordinate and communicate with outside therapists as needed
- Maintain parent/caregiver communication as needed, providing ongoing updates on progress as well as sharing strategies and activities for them to implement at home. Communication should facilitate the family’s understanding of their child’s needs/diagnosis and address any questions or concerns regarding the child’s overall speech-language development
- Create daily session notes as well as write and edit the classroom team’s Mid-Year and End-of-Year reports
- Maintain office and department upkeep and housekeeping (e.g., organize files, update assessment tools)
- Follow appropriate procedures for handling issues with other staff members
- Present in-service workshops and training to staff members as needed
- Present parent workshops and training as needed
- Keep current on professional trends and literature as well as attend continuing education courses on an as-needed basis to advance professional skills
- Maintain an open and honest line of communication with the Head of the SLP Department and the Assistant Head of School. Take an active role in supervision, learning, and training. Actively seek out information and resources appropriate to the school
- Provide classroom staffing support as needed
- Participate in arrival/dismissal duties as needed
- Provide staff and parent in-services as needed
- Contribute to schoolwide website as needed
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and train graduate student interns
- Senior SLPs may be asked to supervise incoming new therapists (Clinical-Fellowship-Year (CFY) candidates)
Required Skills/Abilities
- Hearing ability sufficient to evaluate student's speech
- Communicating verbally and in writing with students, faculty members, and parents so that all parties understand the program and the degree of progress being made
- Thorough understanding of therapy procedures and management
- Ability to relate to children and reinforce therapy sessions
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to collaborate with the classroom team members
- Team-oriented approach with a positive work attitude
Planning and Recordkeeping
- Take daily anecdotal notes in regard to each student’s progress and/or behavioral data as needed
- Informal/Formal assessment of children: collect evidence of outcome based curriculum assessment at least four times per year (October, January, June, and August) in all content areas and keep in a systematic way
- Write Mid-Year and End-of-Year Integrative Reports collaboratively with team
Professional Requirements
- Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (required)
- State license as a Speech-Language Pathologist
- Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD)
- Two years of experience working in the Speech-Language Pathology field (preferred)
Physical Requirements
Employees must have the physical capacity to navigate the classroom and school environments in order to effectively meet the needs of our students. Such physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking, standing, sitting, climbing up and down stairs, kneeling, stooping, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Employees must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time to complete necessary paperwork. Vision, with or without lenses, must be sufficient to read in both paper and digital formats. Employees must have the ability to hear, read, write, and speak in English.
Professional Development
The school is a community of learners. In addition to staff development and training at Gillen Brewer, employees are encouraged to pursue educational goals through conferences and various workshops. Speech-Language Pathologists are required to attend all staff development workshops, staff, team, and supervision meetings. Staff is also encouraged to attend all school functions listed on the school calendar.
Supervision & Support
The Head of the SLP Department will oversee and analyze all aspects of the department through the use of observation cycles, in-office sessions, team meetings, conversations with staff, lesson planning, curriculum development, student progress, and report writing. Staff development and support through modeling and coaching will be provided which will include in-house and outside professional opportunities. Frequency of observations and feedback sessions will be determined by the Department Head and Assistant Head of School. The Head of the SLP Department will conduct two formal evaluations a year using this job description and the SLP Evaluation checklist as a guide. Evidence of effectiveness will be collected through observations, discussions, and products.
Other Requirements
You must be authorized to work in the United States and be willing to undergo a number of clearances including NYC DOE fingerprinting, a medical health form, and other background checks.
