Purpose Statement
We believe that true learning takes place when a student has the opportunity to discover and experience the world around them through inquiry. The San Domenico STEAM program seeks to engage students in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics through the use of Technology, with a creative and artistic mindset. Additionally, it aims to prepare students with the skills to respond with integrity and creativity to the needs of the 21st Century and beyond. The mission of this program is twofold:
1) to incorporate STEAM across K-12 in order to prepare our students for careers and participation in a rapidly changing world, and
2) articulate and document the STEAM curricular goals/experience for all of K-12.
Position Summary
The duties and responsibilities of the Computer Science and STEAM focus on direct student instruction and on collaborating with faculty/staff on special projects in our Design & Innovation Lab. This position will help develop design thinking and computational thinking in the 6-12 curriculum, as well as support San Domenico's expanding Computer Science curriculum.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of middle school/high school teaching experience and a degree in a relevant field.
Responsibilities
- Teach several sections of 9th-grade Computer Science
- Teach 6th, 7th/8th-grade Design & Engineering elective and/or Coding Club
- Serve as Upper School Robotics Coordinator
- Serve as a member of the Math/Computer Science Department, attending departmental meetings, developing and updating course curricula, and supporting the work of the department
Assist with PD experiences for faculty in areas of design, engineering, and computational thinking
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of current Computer Science, Engineering, Design, and Technology educational instruction methods and the ability to create dynamic, engaging lessons, which support a diversity of learners
- Knowledge of the fields of Computer Science and Engineering Technology and demonstrated experience teaching Computer Science beyond an introductory level
- Familiarity with and the ability to teach using both block-based programming language(s) and text-based programming language(s)
- Demonstrated background working with students in STEAM
- Work collaboratively with teachers (6-12) to incorporate principles of innovation and design into project-based learning opportunities, acting as both a coach and co-teacher
- at least 3 years of middle school/high school teaching experience and a degree in a relevant field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience (or familiarity with) tools such as, but not limited to: 3D printing, AutoCAD, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, Arduino, Makey-Makey, Codecademy, Sphero, Tynker, BeeBot, Parrot MiniDrone
- Willingness to learn other design or engineering skills outside of the digital realm
- Design Thinking background and/or equivalent professional development
- Effective written, verbal, and technology-based communication skills
- Clearly communicates technical concepts to non-technical people
- Highly effective listening, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
- Fluent in G Suite / Google Apps for Education
- Able to build enthusiasm for STEAM among both students and faculty
