We are seeking an educator with demonstrated expertise teaching biology/chemistry at the standard and/or advanced level to join our community at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year. This individual must also have passion for innovation and creative problem solving, and have interest and enthusiasm for global and multicultural education.
As stated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061, “A scientifically literate person is one who is aware that science, mathematics, and technology are interdependent human enterprises with strengths and limitations; understands key concepts and principles of science; is familiar with the natural world and recognizes both its diversity and unity; and uses scientific knowledge and scientific ways of thinking for individual and social purposes.” The department hopes to engender a scientific worldview that includes certain beliefs: the world is understandable; scientific ideas are subject to change; science knowledge is durable but cannot provide answers to all questions; science relies on inquiry, evidence and analysis to explain and predict; and scientific work is a complex social activity that has generally accepted ethical principles of conduct.
Essential duties include: (1) planning and preparation of materials, classroom instruction and ongoing student assessment; (2) communication with parents, including formal written reports on students several times per year; (3) active, collaborative participation in the work of the department on curriculum development, pedagogy, and student assessment; (4) serving as an advisor for 10 to 13 students; (5) serving as a chaperone for at least one of our annual Experiential Education programs/trips.
We are looking for someone who has:
- A deep passion for the subject matter
- A variety of classroom techniques and methods to promote high levels of achievement in relation to individual student abilities
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues in the department, across disciplines, and in all divisions
- Ability to create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another; through student-centered instruction, collaboration, and authentic assessment
- The insight to gather and analyze data on student learning and teaching practices to improve the educational experience
- A willingness to contribute to school life as a positive community member in ways that go beyond the role in the classroom
The candidate must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and preferably a master’s degree or the equivalent in biology or chemistry, or an arguably related field. Ideally, candidates will be capable of and comfortable with teaching introductory or advanced biology and/or chemistry. The expertise to teach introductory level physics would be a plus.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and be able to learn to use other applications and hardware (Blackbaud, Apple TV, On Record, Seesaw, Zoom, etc.). Expertise in the use of technology to enhance instruction and manage daily expectations as a team member is also needed.
The ideal candidate is committed to leading and learning with dignity, with a high level of engagement in anti-racist education and culturally responsive instructional practices. They will possess or demonstrate the following: a growth mindset, emotional intelligence, self-motivation, positive energy, strong interpersonal skills, a service-oriented and team approach to work, approachability, adaptability, vulnerability, openness to new and divergent ideas, excellent oral and written communication skills, and comfort in an educational setting where children and adults are present.
All school personnel must successfully complete a fingerprint background check through Live Scan and provide current tuberculosis clearance.
To be considered, please submit (1) your current CV/resume, (2) a cover letter detailing your interest and experience for this role, (3) your educational philosophy statement, and (4) a sample lesson plan.
