Position Summary: An English teacher at Forman develops students with the love of language, and a facility with reading, writing, and oral expression. The ideal candidate aims to develop students at grade level, with the goal that many students will advance to more sophisticated levels of expression and understanding. The ideal candidate should be forward thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists students in the understanding of English grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and understanding of books and other writings skills
- Plan and conduct activities for instruction, demonstration, and work time provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate
- Immerse students in a diverse, robust, and experiential learning experience that promotes deeper thinking
- Meet course and school-wide student performance goals
- Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year. Grade papers and perform other administrative duties. Stay abreast of current topics in education
- Ability of collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and projects
- Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served
- Nurtures discipline-based literacies, developing in students strong oral, reading and writing skills
- Foster an environment in which students learn to think critically and independently
- Provides consistent, timely, and constructive feedback in both writing and verbally
- Demonstrates patience and empathy with adolescents and focuses on fully developing well-rounded individuals
- Implements best practices to support the needs of diverse learners
- Serves the needs of the students through residential, extracurricular, and co-curricular programs. Individual duties may vary but will likely include the following:
- Primary or relief dorm parent
- Advisor
- Coach two athletic or extracurricular activities if not a primary dorm parent
- Chaperone weekend activities as part of a rotating duty schedule
- Assist in clubs and/or various school programs
Other Expectations: This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of School life.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- 3 + years of teaching experience.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration.
- Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices.
- Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats.
- Strong verbal skills.
- Experience with working with students with different learning styles.
- Ability to engage parents and create healthy relationships with students.
