The music program is highly regarded at Abington Friends School and is an integral part of our overall school program. The Music Department emphasizes a program rich in structured curriculum, investigative exploration, performance, visiting artists and community outreach.
Position Description:
We are currently seeking an experienced and energetic Middle and Upper School Instrumental Music Director. The ideal candidate will possess a range of skills as both a performer and also an educator. The candidate must have a commitment to diversity work, an understanding of the importance of teacher engagement and collaboration in overall school community, and an interest in using a variety of pedagogical approaches in the classroom. They will use a passion for teaching to encourage young musicians to explore a variety of playing styles, to refine their techniques, and to take creative risks. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills with colleagues, students and families.
Qualifications for the position include:
- a high level of skill in music performance and music instruction
- an ability to play and instruct a range of instruments
- an advanced level of musical study and an M.M., M.M.Ed., or Masters degree in a related field
- at least five years of teaching experience, including direction of performance ensembles
- comfort working with students ranging from fifth through twelfth grades
Responsibilities for the position include but are not limited to:
- Teach and direct both middle and upper school orchestra and jazz ensembles
- Coordination of logistics of program, including: instrument rentals and maintenance, repertoire selection for multiple musical groups, and creating connections with outside artists and other opportunities
- Instruct a semester long, non-performance based music course in Upper School
- Regular collaboration with vocal and strings instructors
- Have a musically supportive role in all theater productions, which may include music directing one show per year
- Student advising and membership on a grade team
- Commitment to ongoing professional development
