The Head Teacher is responsible for teaching reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to children in grades 3 and 4 (multi-age classroom), as well as collaborating extensively with the grade-level cohort, which includes the other 3rd/4th Grade Head Teacher, assistant teachers, Student Support Teacher, School Counselor, and multilevel (special subjects) teachers for the grade level. The Head Teacher is also responsible for evaluating student progress in these subjects and communicating regularly with parents, including weekly updates to classroom web page, parent-teacher conferences, and emails and phone calls as required to inform parents/guardians of the child’s academic and social-emotional development.

Essential Job Function

Prepare curriculum in these subjects
Coordinate and oversee the work of the assistant teacher
Partners with all adults responsible for students’ education and well-being; collaborates with colleagues to plan and execute weekly Flex Days.
Prepare for and present at school events, such as open houses and informational dinners
Accompany students on overnight camping trips twice per year
Plan and lead field trips to local institutions and parks/natural areas
Communicates regularly with parents, including weekly updates to the classroom web page and emails and phone calls to inform the child’s family of academic and social-emotional development.
Writes narrative-based progress reports, leads and participates in parent-teacher conferences.
Supervises lunch and recess daily.
Prepares for and presents at school events, such as open houses and informational dinners.
Participates in professional activities designated by the Head of School, which may include workshops, curriculum retreats, meetings, grade reporting, planning, and other professional pursuits.
Attends all pre-announced staff meetings and professional sessions, including staff, level, committee, and evening parent meetings.
Follows the school’s policies and procedures for student evaluation and record-keeping, meeting all due dates as required
Assesses the needs of the class and prepares requests for materials, furnishings, and classroom budget; updates inventory list and submits to Head of School on last day of school.
Other job duties as assigned.

Pre-class preparation, including consultation with SST and Grade Level Team

Track attendance and report to the school office students who are in/out
Receive and welcome students
Consult with other teachers for curriculum ideas, sharing materials, and scheduling common activities

Teaching Expectations During Class

Uphold and reinforce positive behavior by modeling or drawing attention to ground rules
Remain in contact with the whole group and sense changing mood or activity
Conference with individual children about their work
Treat children with unconditional positive regard and provide individualized care for needs

Expectations After Dismissal

Refresh the environment
Complete daily notes
Reflect on individual children and group interaction
Assemble materials for the following instructional day
Communicate with SST and grade level team about any learning or social-emotional issues that surfaced during the day

Weekly Expectations

Note needed janitorial services, work orders
Restructure classroom routine as needed
Place orders or go shopping
Meet with co-workers, Division Head, and Head of School to share ideas, plan, and problem solve
Perform the following selected duties as needed:
Update long-range class and children’s records
Organize special projects
Read professional journals or articles
Confer with Head of School as requested

Occasional and Ongoing Expectations

Prepare notes for conferences
Participate in staff meetings
Participate in parent education
Participate in Board meetings, as requested
Participate in professional meetings outside of school
Prepare for school’s community activities such as open houses, observations, and all general meetings or special events

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

Masters in Education or one of the subject areas taught
Minimum of three years of teaching rooted in progressive education
Elementary teaching experience
Experience integrating social justice themes
Familiarity with Macintosh platform and Google suite of products
Requirements

CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
Pass a background check
Have the physical capacity to work with children.
Keep up with professional development – 15 hours per school year.
