About the Position
The Math/Science teacher is responsible for teaching math and science and serves as a homeroom teacher responsible for building community and attending to the social/emotional development of students.
Overview of curriculum:
- The math curriculum includes arithmetic, a rational number study, statistics, problem solving, and geometry.
- The focus of the science course is a study of force, motion, and simple machines, exploring variables as a function of experimental design, and a study of geology.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with math/science partner to plan curriculum
- Serve as co-advisor (homeroom teacher)
- Collaborate with the Math/Science Team and Math/Science Coordinator to develop curriculum
- Attend regular division, department, and supervisory meetings
- Communicate regularly with families and others who support learning and growth
- Provide extra help to students as necessary during activities period and before school
- Other duties as specified by division
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
- 3+ years of teaching math and/or science at the upper elementary or middle school level
- Experience working as part of a collaborative team of teachers
- A background in a materials-based discovery approach to mathematics and/or science
Skills and Experience:
- Background in teaching math and/or science at the upper elementary or middle school level
- Candidate should have an understanding of inquiry based pedagogy
- Experience with TERC (Investigations) and Connected Mathematics preferred
- Experience in developing curriculum
- Experience with both standards-based assessment and progressive teaching methods preferred
- Ability to effectively differentiate instruction
- Experience with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy
- Strong organizational skills
- Proficiency with incorporating technology into the classroom to enhance student learning
- High energy, a sense of humor, and a strong ability to connect with adolescents
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal: an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents and administration
- Experience writing narrative reports about student progress and goals
- Ability to meet and adhere to multiple deadlines
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and lifelong learning
- Knowledge and understanding of child development and and constructivist teaching
- Demonstrated classroom management skills
