Severn School seeks a learning specialist to support middle school and high school students.
Reporting to the director of the Learning Resource Center (LRC), the learning specialist will work collaboratively with students, families, and faculty to develop and incorporate appropriate strategies, accommodations, and modifications that will facilitate student academic success. The learning specialist will partner with faculty and administrators to better understand and meet the needs of students across grade levels. As a member of the LRC staff, this individual will help assess learning needs and provide individual and small group academic support to diverse learners in grades 6-12, in literacy, numeracy, and executive functioning. In addition, the learning specialist will work closely with teachers to provide support with differentiation and offer consultation on accommodating a range of learning styles in the classroom.
This is a full-time, 10-month position.
Qualifications (preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications):
- Master’s degree in education or special education or equivalent training
- Experience as a school-based learning specialist
- Knowledge, skills, and professional experience with underlying attention, memory, language, social skill, and executive functioning challenges and how they impact learning and academic success
- Fondness for working with middle school and upper school students
- Ability to establish effective and collaborative working relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
- Appropriate technology skills to accomplish job responsibilities
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Position Expectations (the individual selected to fill this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities, though the list is not exhaustive):
- Design and implement learning profiles, plans, and programs to actively engage students to meet their learning goals, including the use of assistive technology
- Maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support
- Make regular assessments of student achievement and progress
- Report regularly on student achievement and progress
- Maintain the school’s electronic learning profile system and learning support plans for each student who needs additional support
- Deliver trainings for faculty focused on supporting neurodiversity
- Provide direct support to students through one-to-one meetings and small group lessons
- Participate in parent education related to learning styles, attention difficulties, dyslexia, and other language-based challenges
- Collaborate with teachers to assess and implement student accommodations and support needs
