Under the direction of the Head of Upper School and the English Department Chair, the part-time Upper School English teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing lessons that cover both the content and skills of the Upper School English curriculum. Qualified candidates will be able to create and provide an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of high school students to ensure success for each student as well as monitor and evaluate academic outcomes. All Cape Henry Collegiate teachers are expected to communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community in a manner that represents the mission and core values of the school.
Position Duties (include, but are not limited to)
- Plan and implement lessons that meet the content and skills-related goals and objectives of the English curriculum.
- Collaborate with colleagues around best practices in the classroom.
- Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
- Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
- Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of Division Head.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and fair classroom environment for all students.
- Collaborate with the English Department to support both curricular goals as well as the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students.
- Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required for a part-time position.
- Perform other duties as required.
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience within the content area.
- Ability to plan and implement effective lessons to engage upper school students.
- Effective use of formative and summative evaluation to meet the needs of each student.
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
- Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum.
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Candidates with a Master’s Degree and/or state teaching license will be given preferential treatment.
