Description
Baker Demonstration School, an independent progressive PK-8 school on Chicago’s North Shore, is seeking a Dean of Student Engagement to support PK - 8th grade students in their personal and social-emotional growth. The Dean of Student Engagement is a visible presence throughout the school providing support and building relationships with students, faculty and families. The Dean is responsible for student life including student activities, leadership development and student discipline and works collaboratively with faculty, team leaders, and the Student Services and leadership teams on issues related to student support and wellness. Balancing work as student advocate with responsibility for managing student conduct, the Dean of Student Engagement plays a key role in leading and supporting a healthy, inclusive school climate and culture. We value candidates who have a love of people - students, teachers, and parents; understand children from a developmental lens; demonstrate collaborative, strengths-based leadership centered in cultural competency, equity and inclusivity, and who are wise, decisive decision makers. This 11 month position will include teaching 1-2 classes or electives in the candidate’s area of expertise.

Requirements
- Demonstrated experience working with elementary and middle school students as a teacher, coach, and/or leader
- Demonstrated problem-solving, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills
- Experienced leader in centering equity, inclusivity and cultural competency and supporting initiatives that align with the school’s mission and guiding principles
- Skill and commitment to contribute positively to the school community and to develop strong relationships with students, teachers, colleagues and families

Responsibilities
- Actively engage, listen to, and advocate for student voices and concerns
- Promote high standards and consistent expectations for student leadership, personal growth, and community responsibility
- Lead the student disciplinary process; dealing with the violation of school rules in a timely and thorough manner to ensure fair, consistent disciplinary practices that align with the school’s mission and guiding principles
- Work closely with the Student Services team, Team Leaders, and Leadership Team to support individual student health, safety, and well-being as well as that of the community as a whole
- Work closely with the faculty to coordinate student co- and extra-curriculars
- Lead and support equity, inclusivity and anti-racism work, collaborating with teams to incorporate this work in all aspects of student life
- Coordinate and schedule special programs and events for students. Participate in grade-level experiential trips
- Lead revisions and updates on all student aspects of the Community Handbook
- Represent the PK - 8th grade at school community events
- Coordinate and plan out a slate of dynamic weekend activities over the course of the school year
- Keep the Head of School informed regarding student issues and campus life
