The Seattle Jewish Community School (SJCS) is an intimate, K-5 Jewish community school operating with a cohort model and located in the Green Lake neighborhood of North Seattle.
The Position: SJCS seeks to hire a Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy, to begin for the 2022-2023 / 5783 school year. This position could operate from a 0.75 to a 1.0 FTE, depending on what the successful candidate and school determine together will be the best mix of teaching, other responsibilities, and administrative roles. The Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy will report directly to the Head of School.
Core Responsibilities: Working as a member of the school’s leadership team and in collaboration with all stakeholders, the Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy will:
- Work with the Head of School to build on the school’s programmatic strengths and to identify and pursue aspirational opportunities
- Lead periodic meetings of the General Studies team focused on coordinating efforts, stimulating exchanges of ideas, and developing pedagogies and curricula
- Supervise the General Studies teachers, conducting classroom observations and engaging in reflective joint consideration of the teachers’ work toward their professional goals
- Partner with the Director of Jewish Learning and Life in capitalizing on synergies across the program
- Build, oversee, and maintain the daily schedule, in collaboration with administrative partners and teachers
- Serve as a consultant to teachers on classroom management and communication with parents
- Advance the school’s focus within the curriculum on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
- Work with the faculty to expand place-based learning opportunities, including those connected to Green Lake park and the school’s city and region
- Work with the Tzevet Tmicha (Student Support Team) and the faculty to ensure that students are supported, encouraged, and challenged
- Collaborate with the Inclusive Education Specialist and the faculty to maintain thoughtful approaches to monitoring and assessing student progress and reporting on it
- Promote professional learning opportunities for all employees
- Assume a leadership role in the school’s work over the next two years toward re-accreditation by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools
- Partner with the Head of School, Director of Advancement, COFO, and all members of the professional team in advancing the institution
Qualifications:
- Degree in a discipline related to the responsibilities of the position
- At least five years of working in an educational environment, with elementary contexts preferred
- Experience in school administration preferred
- Experience with supervising and mentoring direct reports appreciated
- Experience in guiding the professional learning of educators appreciated
- Acquired knowledge and/or readiness to acquire knowledge in curriculum-design and pedagogy
- Familiarity with study of Jewish texts and Hebrew language a plus but not required
- Strong oral, written, and non-verbal communication, nurtured by curiosity and conviction
- Passionate commitment to children and to their learning and growth
- Sustained commitment to the practices of self-reflection, collegiality, and professionalism
- An explorer’s mentality with appreciation for flexibility, experimentation, reconsideration, and good humor
- Readiness to make mistakes and learn from them along with others who do the same
