Friends Seminary, an independent Quaker school educating students in grades K-12 in New York City since 1786, seeks an experienced teacher of physical education to join our PE department. Applicants should have a background in physical education and a commitment to instilling the values of physical activity and kinesthetic knowledge in young people. The Friends Seminary PE program values strong habits of physical activity, development of skills, and the importance of cooperation and sportsmanship. PE teachers at Friends teach classes in multiple grade levels, K-12, and also serve as advisors and athletic coaches.
The School also seeks a department chair for the PE department. Applicants should indicate in their cover letter if the chair role is something they would like to be considered for.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of current best practices in physical and health education
- Degree or significant coursework in physical education
- Experience working with children between ages 5-18
- Strong communication and organization skills
Additional Responsibilities for Department Chair
- Supervising and evaluating PE faculty
- Coordination of hiring new PE faculty
- Establishment of PE teaching assignments
- Establishment and evaluation of PE curriculum, including new courses and units of study
- Setting agenda for and conducting regular department meetings
- Approval of purchases and oversight of departmental budget
- Support of PE faculty professional development activities
