Position Description
Saint Mary’s Hall seeks an experienced music educator, with an expertise in vocal music and piano accompaniment, to serve Middle and Upper School students in vocal and instrumental music classes and activities, as well as to provide accompaniment for school events.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Upper School Vocal Ensemble and the Middle School Chorus Club and to prepare students for concert performances
- To assist the Middle and Upper School Instrumental Music Director with Band classes
- To be part of the creative team for the Fall Musical, lead vocal rehearsals, and provide accompanist duties for after-school rehearsals and evening performances
- Provide piano accompaniment for all school events such as chapel and graduation
- Assist the School Chaplain in incorporating music into weekly Chapel program and other school ceremonies
- To teach private lessons (voice and piano) according to demand, and prepare students for performances
- To participate in the Upper School wellness rotation by offering choral music activities
- To serve Upper School students as an advisor or sponsor
- To grow enrollment in the vocal music program
- To work with the division head and the fine arts faculty & staff on continual refinement and improvement of the music curriculum
- To prepare an environment in which the furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the group, as well as individual students
- To protect the privacy and working environment of the class at all times
- To conduct class meetings for parents when appropriate and communicate and cooperate with parents on a regular and consistent basis
- To assist with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned by the Administration and or Director of Fine Arts
- To understand and exhibit a professional manner at all times including after-school and weekend functions
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Music, with a specialization in voice and piano, is required
- Expertise in leading musical ensembles is required
- Experience in musical theater and secondary school teaching is strongly preferred
- Woodwinds, percussion, and/or jazz experience is a plus
- Student-centered, collaborative, and transparent professional who is accessible to students, parents, and colleagues, is adept at building relationships, and supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in practice
- Academic leader with extraordinarily high expectations of themselves and the ability to inspire and motivate others

Len Miller joined Saint Mary’s Hall as the 25th Head of School in July of 2020. Len comes to San Antonio after a 25-year career in independent schools. He served previously at some of our nation’s top schools, including The Hill School, The Lawrenceville School, and The Shipley School. His tenure has been hallmarked by a deep commitment to the quality of the academic program, the student experience, and the long-term sustainability and growth of the institution. Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Work in a classroom environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- Gross and Fine motor skills are needed for instruction, i.e. holding, grasping, touching, etc.
- The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish vocal sounds, tones, and pitches
- The ability to express, exchange or demonstrate spoken instructions to students, faculty, and staff accurately
- Occasionally bend, stoop, and squat
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled environment
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
