Groton School is seeking an Associate Technical Director to join our Performing Arts Department. The Associate Technical Director assists with daily operations of the Campbell Performing Arts Center (CPAC), is an integral member of the theater department and works with students during afternoon activities.
A coeducational, primarily residential school of 383 students, Groton sets for its students the highest standards of academic achievement, intellectual growth, ethical awareness and behavior and service to others.
This is a full-time salaried position during the academic year (40 hours per week from September through June) reporting to the Technical Director.
Essential Duties
The Associate Technical Director:
- assists in creating drawings, determining construction methods, acquiring materials, and building scenery
- preps the theater shop and projects each day to teach students proper use of hand tools, power tools, and all shop equipment
- assists the Technical Director in contracting additional labor and monitoring contract labor progress
- teaches students to interpret technical drawings, make cut lists and build scenery
- instructs students in the safe use of professional theater equipment (including operation of fly system, basic lighting systems and sound engineering)
- contributes to all aspects of theater production, including props, paint, sound, and lighting
- assists the Technical Director in training stage managers and stagecraft students in the tech process and safe operation of technical equipment
- maintains (with the Technical Director) the CPAC facility by repairing equipment, organizing all storage facilities, and maintaining inventories of all shop and theater equipment
- supports the Technical Director in managing and scheduling space requests
- assists in sending interdepartmental communications
- oversees communication with contracted designers on a per show basis

For consideration, candidates must have a working knowledge of all aspects of theater production, both technical and performance, and a demonstrated proficiency in:
- technical design and interpreting technical drawings
- various theatrical practices and styles of construction methods
- using a wide range of materials towards creative ends
- scenic construction, scenic painting, and scene shop operations
- using hand tools and power tools
- counterweight rigging operations
- basic lighting control
- basic audio engineering and mixing
- organizing and leading crews
- the technical production process
- Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD
Additional Requirements
- B.A. in Theater or B.F.A. in Theater Design or Technology or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in technical theater production or related field
- At least one year of experience in an educational environment at the high school level is strongly desired
Knowledge of and experience with the following are a plus:
- CNC fabrication, maker spaces and STEAM education
- Sketchup, Fusion, V-Carve
- Dante, NDI, sACN, and other network protocols used in entertainment
- welding/metal fabrication
