MIDDLE SCHOOL INNOVATION AND DESIGN TEACHER
Reports to: Head of Middle School and Director of Technology & Innovation
Status: Full-time, salaried, exempt, 10-month position
Purpose: To design, develop and implement Innovation and Design curriculum for students in grades 6 - 8. Rooted in Design Thinking, MYP Design is one the eight core subject groups in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.
The aim of MYP Innovation and Design is to encourage and enable students to:
- Enjoy the design process, and develop an appreciation of its elegance and power
- Develop knowledge, understanding and skills from different disciplines to design and create solutions to problems using the design cycle
- Use and apply technology effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, model and create solutions, and to solve problems
- Develop an appreciation of the impact of design innovations for life, global society and environments
- Appreciate past, present and emerging design within cultural, political, social, historical and environmental contexts
- Develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
- Act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for their own actions developing effective working practices
Duties:
- Develop and implement MYP Design curriculum for students in grades 6 - 8
- Promote design thinking curriculum
- Guide students through the engineering design process
- Work collaboratively with the Technology and Innovation Department to provide consultation and support for teachers in the integration of innovative applications and tools
- Assist Middle School students with technology as needed
- Stay current on innovative technology and pedagogy through conferences, outside collaboration, PLN, etc.
- Participate in Middle School grade level planning meetings
- Perform other duties assigned by the Head of Middle School, Director of Technology & Innovation or Head of School
- Support the School and its leadership.
- Other duties as required by the Head of School, Head of Middle School and Director of Technology & Innovation.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the area of educational technology, innovation or similar field
- Minimum three years of classroom experience, preferably in a 6-8 school environment
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) experience preferred
- An understanding of key learning theories and methods of instruction and their relation to educational technology
- A growth mindset and willingness to stay fresh and innovative
- Familiarity with educational practices specific to Middle School students
- Ability to work collaboratively in designing and implementing curriculum
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus, both internal and external.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders of the school.
- Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
- Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- High energy, self-starter with the ability to successfully prioritize and multi-task in an atmosphere in which sensitive deadlines are the norm, as are interruptions
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in MS office suite.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to solve basic technical problems
- Experience with digital fabrication tools (3D printers, laser cutters, etc)
- Experience working with multiple technology platforms (PC, Mac, iPad, mobile, etc.)
- Experience with various programming languages (Lego Robotics, Scratch, Java, etc.)
- Experience in photo, video and audio editing tools (ex. Adobe Suite, Photoshop, Premier, Audacity)
- Interest and aptitude for basic engineering, including skills in low technology areas with a variety of tools
