Kimball Union Academy (KUA) seeks a Learning Specialist and 9th Grade Dean to become a full-time faculty member who will actively support and fulfill KUA’s mission “to create a deep sense of belonging for every member of our community. Through intentionally designed experiences and challenges, our students develop the knowledge, voice, and character to live with purpose and integrity.”
The Learning Specialist, with an emphasis on reading support, would provide comprehensive learning services to students with mild to moderate learning disabilities in a 1:1 setting. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the academic, emotional and brain-based components of learning in adolescence with the ability to utilize assistive technologies and interventions to support student growth.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Learning Specialist responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- TUTOR 8 students two to three times per week both during the class-day and afternoon activities
- Work with students on reading support, math skills and executive functioning
- Communicate regularly with parents, teachers, and advisors by phone, in-person, and through written progress reports
- Pursue growth in understanding and implementation of the most current educational brain science
- Teach a curriculum and work in collaboration with a community that embraces diversity, provides equity, and ensures inclusion and belonging for all
Ninth-Grade Dean responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, revise, coordinate, and deliver the 9th grade co-curriculum, including:
- the 9th grade advisory experience
- the curriculum for Choices
- engagement with Community Action blocks
- coordination of the 9th grade residence life curriculum
- Chair the Ninth Grade Team to gather information about members of the class
- Teach 9th Grade Choices class
- Pair with an AARC member for the first year and serve on AARC thereafter
- Create, coordinate, and maintain touchpoints for 9th grade families with the Academy
- Co-advise with a 9th grade advisor for the first year and advise a 9th grade group thereafter
- Serve in our school-night evening program and work within a team to supervise and facilitate weekend activities on occasional weekends
QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced work in special education or reading Instruction
- Three years of experience as a learning specialist at the high school level
- Outstanding interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Current with evidence and brain-based pedagogical practices
- Collaborative approach willing to work closely with colleagues both in and outside of the department
- Facility with Mac OS, Microsoft365, Google apps, and other education-enhancing technology
- Flexible, resilient, and creative working within a fast-paced environment
- Personal dedication to investing in the lives of young people
- Strong analytical skills and an ability to learn new systems quickly
