ART TEACHER
Position type: Full time, exempt; Grade levels 4th - 8th grade
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. (unless otherwise specified)
Reports to: Head of Early Childhood
Position Summary:
The Art Teacher is a specials area teacher who is responsible for teaching art curriculum
to students in grades 4 through grade 8. Curriculum elements will include: elements and principles of design; drawing; color theory; art criticism; aesthetics; and art history.
Responsibilities:
- Teach students the knowledge and skills of elements of design and principles of art.
- Develop an aesthetic understanding and appreciation that allows students to make qualitative judgments about art.
- Further the students' knowledge of visual arts and media through art theory and history
- Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.
- Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and provide trimester assessments.
- Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work.
- Maintain communication with parents, faculty, staff, and students.
- Participate in an end of year summative review with the Division Head.
- Attend faculty, staff, and division meetings.
- Attend workshops and other professional development opportunities to continue to grow professionally in the areas of gifted and art education.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Certification in Art Education strongly preferred
- Demonstrated lead teaching experience
- Understanding of and ability to differentiate curriculum, especially with gifted students
- Knowledge and understanding of color theory; elements and principles of design; art historical eras and various cultures
- Ability to draw well with a firm understanding and mastery of perspective drawing, shading, figure drawing, blind-contour drawing, etc.
- Knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of gifted students is highly preferred
- Experience working in a team teaching environment and with interdisciplinary projects
- Capability to develop and maintain appropriate working relationships with parents
- Familiar with using current technology integrated in the art curriculum
