Teacher Position Description
The Early Childhood Teacher is the lead member of the classroom teaching team. The Teacher supervises, instructs, and guides the children in a Reggio-inspired, project-based early childhood classroom. With the support of the assistant the Teacher establishes a safe and caring classroom community in which each child’s strengths, opinions, actions and thoughts are valued. The Teacher uses appropriate language and tone and utilizes the principles of Responsive Classroom in all interactions with the children. The Teacher promotes the school’s mission and conducts him/herself in a professional manner in all interactions with children, families, and staff.
Teacher Duties and Responsibilities
The Teacher
- Works under the general supervision of the Director of Program for Young Children
- Sets/up the classroom in August and breaks-down the classroom in June
- Conducts welcome visits with families in August.
- Participates in Arrival and Dismissal duties daily.
- Supervises all children, always maintaining proper staff/child ratios.
- Maintains the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the classroom (sweeps, wipes tables, washes art materials and dishes, returns used materials to proper places, etc)
- Submits daily attendance via My Compass.
- Records snack on monthly snack calendar
- Chooses and prepares snack; returns unused snack to snack cabinet in pantry
- Changes diapers and/or assists with toileting as necessary
- Performs office tasks (laminating, copying, bulletin boards, etc) as needed.
- Updates newsletter and photo albums on My Compass page weekly.
- Communicates with parents regarding curriculum and daily happenings in person or on My Compass, email, or phone calls.
- Sets up interest areas daily, reinforcing a particular study and refreshing available activities/materials on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.
- Prepares appropriate documentation including bulletin boards, class books, newsletters, etc.
- Assesses and documents student’s growth and learning via written reports 2 times (Preschool) or 3 times (PreK) a year.
- Attends all Early Childhood Program meetings called by the Director of Program for Young Children
- Participates in scheduled staff Professional Development days as indicated on the school calendar.
- Attends Early Childhood Program special events as appropriate for grade level (Back to School Night, Family Fun Day, Grandfriends Day, The Friendly Beasts performance, etc)
- Attends the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal Schools Association (MAESA) conference annually.
- Conducts Parent/Teacher Conferences in the fall and spring.
- Acquires and maintains CPR certification.
- Submits requests for leave to Director of Program for Young Children in advance of scheduled absences.
