Middle School Math Teacher
Berkshire Country Day School
Stockbridge, MA
Position Start Date: August 2022
Status: Full-Time
Berkshire Country Day School seeks an experienced, collaborative, student-centered middle school math teacher for the 2022/2023 school year. The successful candidate wants to positively impact the lives of young people through math education. The math teacher is responsible for effectively collaborating to create a nurturing educational environment, delivering high-quality, differentiated instruction, and supporting the social-emotional growth of students.
At Berkshire Country Day School, we are engaged in an educational program that goes beyond our classrooms working to create a whole-school environment that provides students, families, and teachers with exceptional educational opportunities to become engaged and active citizens who use their unique strengths to create a more just and sustainable future. Grounded in our core values of empathy, literacy, sustainability, engagement, and social justice, rooted in a growth and inquiry mindset, BCD is a leader in elementary school civics education where each child is at the center of their own learning. Our mission is to prepare students to be lifelong citizens dedicated to a sustainable and just future. Berkshire Country Day School serves students in Preschool (beginning at age 2) through Eighth Grade.
Primary responsibilities include teaching 3 sections of math, integrated studies, and serving as an advisor. The ideal candidate will have the capacity to teach at least through Algebra II. A curiosity about and deep knowledge of one’s subject, enthusiasm for teaching middle schoolers, and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues are essential expectations of all BCD Middle School faculty. As an inclusive school committed to social justice and preparing students to live and work in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, BCD is particularly interested in professionals with demonstrated interest and experience in working in such a school setting.
The successful candidate will have an approach to the discipline that encourages a high degree of math fluency and problem-solving by balancing scope and sequence with interesting and engaging projects. We believe that students are most successful when their ability to “speak and write math” is cultivated alongside their ability to solve problems showing their work. We are looking to hire a candidate with the capacity to meet the needs of a range of learners—both engaging struggling students as they hone their number sense and teaching advanced math to students ready for that challenge. A good sense of humor, a positive outlook, and an appreciation of the unique qualities of the age group are essential. Middle school teachers also serve as student advisors and engage students in social-emotional learning as well as acting as liaisons between their student’s families and the school.
The individual who fills this role will:
- Provide a progressive, concept-based math curriculum to students in Grades 6-8.
- Assess and adapt the math curriculum to meet the needs of students and classes in a flexible and responsive manner.
- Employ instructional strategies that reflect the variety of student learning styles in math.
- Use a variety of assessment techniques to track student progress
- Serve as an advisor in the Middle School
- Attend and actively participate in BCD events, as assigned
