Asheville School is currently seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Business Office Team. This position assists with the accounting operations of the School, to include the production of periodic financial reports, analysis and processing of all expenditures, maintaining financial controls for outgoing funding transactions and mitigate risk, identify and implement cost reducing actions that enhance the value provided by school vendors, and ensure that transactions comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Staff Accountant performs the following functions:
- Processes payment requests, tracks cash requirements, and arranges payments.
- Oversees filing of payables-related paperwork and digital files.
- Manages vendors, including credit applications and vendor list.
- Oversees the school’s credit card purchasing program, including processing monthly reports.
- Support HR with payroll processing and annual 403b audits.
- Manages the school’s sales and use tax compliance.
- Communicates with employees related to General Ledger activity.
- Assists with month end closing procedures in a timely manner.
- Maintains processes and controls that are current best practices.
- Manages the distribution of Form 1099 at year-end.
- Supports the Comptroller in annual financial statement audit.
- Ensures the School’s purchases are capturing any discounts available to the School such as through purchase consortiums.
- Works with employees to identify expense reduction opportunities through securing multiple quotes on large purchases and supporting vendor negotiations to achieve the best value for service and products.
- Generate independent financial analysis to improve the operations of the school and save money.
Secondary Duties
- Assists with ad hoc projects as necessary to ensure efficient and consistent business office operations.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or related field and three years of related accounting experience; or an Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or related field and five years of related accounting experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and seven years of related accounting experience.
- Personal initiative with exceptional work ethic and integrity.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Goal-oriented with ability to prioritize actions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, which includes seeing the bigger picture while focusing on the details.
- Demonstrated skill in working with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.
- A customer service orientation.
- Proficient in Microsoft office suite.
Preferred Qualification
- Proficient with Blackbaud’s Financial Edge.
- Accounting experience in an independent school setting.
