The Kinkaid School is seeking a Controller to join its Business Office team. The Kinkaid School is a co-educational non-sectarian day school enrolling 1,400 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the school offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, diverse culture.
The role of the Controller is an integral part of the Business Office, responsible for coordinating and assisting in the preparation of financial reports such as statements of activities, statements of financial position, statements of cash flows, and analyses of historical and projected income and expenses, in addition to other special reports that may be needed. The Controller manages the accounting, student billing, accounts payable, endowment, and payroll operations and oversees the functions of audit, tax, and budgeting. Everybody in business office reports to Controller.
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller is also responsible for recommending and administering all accounting policies and procedures, insuring that strong internal controls and effective transaction processing routines protect the assets of the school and result in meaningful, timely and accurate financial reporting.
Essential Duties:
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including preparation of monthly financial statements and variance analyses.
- Supervise and assist business office functions including endowment and capital campaign accounting, accounts payable, payroll, student billing and accounts receivable.
- Assist the CFO in the preparation and monitoring of department budgets and forecasts working with other administrators and department heads concerning budget performance.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee annual financial and benefit audits.
- Coordinate and assist in preparation of IRS forms including 990’s and 5500’s.
- Maintain fixed asset records for school property and calculate annual depreciation.
- Cross-train on finance functions including accounts payable, payroll, student billing and other accounting functions.
- Serve as system administrator on all accounting and financial programs.
- Prepare, post and reconcile accounting entries from student billing, payroll, and point of sales programs.
- Ensure accurate and appropriate coding and/or approval of all revenue, expenditure and journal transactions to their appropriate accounts, including unrestricted, temporarily restricted and permanently restricted funds.
- Maintain accurate and appropriate general ledger chart of accounts.
- Provide support in the hiring, training and review of accounting department staff.
- Communicate accounting policies to employees and ensure compliance with such policies.
- Actively stay current on new regulations in GAAP and relevant non-profit accounting issues.
- Prepare all periodic surveys and compliance reports for various school industry organizations.
- Provide support for the CFO at Finance Committee or other Board-related meetings.
- Track restricted gifts and related activity.
Qualifications:
- CPA with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in accounting including non-profit accounting, including supervisory experience
- Bachelors required; Masters preferred
- Ability to create and maintain a warm and supportive environment that serves colleagues, parents, trustees, and students with patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm.
- Strong organizational and written and verbal communication skills
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products and other computerized accounting and business systems (experience with Blackbaud is a plus)
