The Overlake School seeks a full-time Upper School Social Studies / English teacher for the 2022-23 school year.

Diversity Strategic Plan (DSP) Statement: TOS's new Diversity Strategic Plan builds on Inclusion and Equity values, where students gain cultural competency and anti-racism skills they will carry as graduates. Over the next five years, there are Five Goals which we will work towards. The successful candidate will be an integral part of this process and the department.
Responsibilities:
The full-time Social Studies & English teacher will be responsible for two sections of a thematic early world history course focused on topics from the ancient world up to the 18th century and will also be responsible for two sections of English for our US students. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively and closely with other colleagues in both departments who are also teaching these courses.
Once the teacher starts the school year, they will be required to participate in other school activities that include club facilitator; Experiential Education or Outdoor program experiences as a chaperone; as well as Project Week leader, or co-facilitator. They will lead an Upper School advisory (homeroom). They will also be required to collaborate with their peers to prepare for classes and contribute to the overall process of teaching and their courses. Overlake seeks an outstanding educator who will contribute to our school community on many levels.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in history, English, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years of teaching experience
- Demonstrate cultural competence in teaching and pedagogy.
- Effective practices that engage students' thinking about power, equity, and disruptions of oppression across the curriculum are required given that equity and inclusion work is at the heart of excellent teaching and learning across the campus, in both classroom and co-curricular programming.
- Technologically proficient and interested in incorporating technology in instruction.
- Ability to successfully pass required background checks.
- Fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (including booster if eligible)
Desired Qualifications
- Familiar with current teaching practices in the humanities
- A strong background in World History focusing on non-Western history and framework that decenters the Eurocentric perspective and at least some experience teaching American History or Government.
- A strong background in teaching foundational expository writing, analytical and close reading skills.
- Experience or interest in the AP English courses preferred.
- Experience designing curriculum and courses, with particular emphasis on intentional design for equity, inclusion, and cultural competency.
- Being a collaborative colleague and expected to work with an instructional coach
- A student-centered approach to teaching
- A skilled writing instructor
- Familiar with a variety of assessment styles
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Desire to contribute to Overlake beyond the classroom. Roles include advisory, clubs and athletics, adult teams such as affinity programs, and strategic schoolwork through the diversity task force.
