Position Summary:
Sycamore School seeks an experienced Band Director/Music Teacher for its lower and middle school students (3rd -8th grade) for the 2022-2023 school year. The MS Band Director and LS Music Teacher is a specials area teacher who is responsible for directing our high level band,
teaching music education and music performance curriculum, assessing and evaluating student performance and preparing students for in school concerts and assemblies, and regional and state contests. Curriculum elements may include: music comprehension/appreciation, harmony, and explorations in instrumental and choral music. This teacher will also be a MS Advisor.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute band classes for grades 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th, music classes for 3rd grade and 4th grade students, middle school electives, and, including preparation and implementation of weekly lessons, class set-up and clean-up, gathering of supplemental materials, etc.
- Plan and prepare lower school students for 1 concert/performance per year in collaboration with other special area classes and grade level academic teachers.
- Plan and prepare middle school students for 2-3 concerts per year, ISSMA solo and ensemble contest, pep rally assembly, and 8th grade graduation.
- Requisition musical instruments and maintain care/responsibility for school owned music, musical instruments, and equipment.
- Schedule required maintenance of school equipment and instruments.
- Assist the MS Choir Director during choir classes.
- Work with the Advancement Office to provide student performances for Grandparents’ Day and other events as needed.
- Serve as an advisor to MS students.
- Plan and coordinate curriculum-related field trips or guest artists when appropriate.
- Establish behavior expectations and maintain student control in the classroom, on school premises and at off-site contests, performances, and field trips.
- Develop, update, and document music curriculum as needed.
- Maintain communication with parents, faculty, staff, and students.
- Collaborate with other faculty, especially those within the music department.
- Provide trimester report cards.
- Participate in end-of-year summative review with the Supervising Division Head.
- Attend faculty, staff, and division meetings.
- Attend workshops and other professional development opportunities to continue to grow professionally in the areas of gifted education and music education.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Certification in Music Education
- Ability to play piano
- Woodwind or percussion expertise preferred
- Experience working with elementary and middle school age students
- Orff, Kodaly, or other specialized training preferred
- Desire to provide a stimulating, energetic, and supportive environment for music students.
- Demonstrated lead teaching experience
- Understanding of and ability to differentiate curriculum especially for gifted students ages 8-14.
- Knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of gifted students is preferred
- Experience working in a team teaching environment
- Capability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with Sycamore community
