BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL SEEKS SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR
ABOUT OUR SCHOOL:
Barrow Street Nursery School, located in the West Village of NYC, is a play-based early childhood program building on ideas from Bank Street & Reggio Emilia. At Barrow, we believe the early years are the most productive of a child's life and we challenge our students to excel in ways that fit their own unique development. We believe that children learn best in an environment that is filled with opportunities to explore their world and to build on their previous experiences. Early childhood teachers at Barrow Street understand that play is the work of children. We believe that it is the basis for developing meaningful social interactions, creative problem-solving skills, and a wide range of communication and physical abilities.
SUBSTITUTE POSITION:
Substitute teachers work with students of various ages (2 - 5 years old) in a classroom setting between the hours of 8:30 - 5:30. We have a variety of classes, and subs can be called in for just a morning session (9 am - 12 pm), just an afternoon (1 - 4 pm), or all day. We only hire a few substitutes each year and like to use them consistently to ensure familiar faces for our young students. We are looking for candidates who embrace our progressive philosophy. We have a wonderful community of teachers, and substitutes must be open to learning and growing through this experience.
Barrow Street teachers teach in teams of 2 or 3, so 1 or 2 team members will always be present when a substitute steps in to provide classroom support. The ability to jump in, take initiative, and collaborate with other teachers and students is extremely important.
Hours are flexible and are based upon our needs and your availability.
This position is ideal for any of the following:
-
An undergrad or graduate student in early education looking to have some real experience in the classroom.
-
Someone who has many years of experience but doesn't want to commit to the demands of a full-time position.
-
Someone who has had prior experience working with young children and wants to make their own hours part-time, but is not necessarily enrolled in education courses at this time.
TO APPLY:
Send a cover letter and resume to Samson Baker, Educational Director at sbaker@barrowstreetnursery.org. Kindly reference your last name, first name, job title in the subject line, and where you heard about this position in the body of your email.
For further information about Barrow Street’s history, mission and program, please visit and read our website at www.barrowstreetnurseryschool.org.

Our community draws strength from the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of our joyful children, dedicated teachers, and engaged families.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Candidates MUST be able to demonstrate prior experience working with young children. This can be formal (in an educational setting) or informal (providing childcare for family, siblings, etc.)
-
Open to working in different classrooms; previous experience that can demonstrate the ability to jump right in and adapt to new situations is highly beneficial
-
Flexibility in schedule between 8:30 - 5:30, Monday through Friday.
-
Ideally, candidates have completed or are enrolled in an education program, either for undergrad or grad, but this is not a disqualifying factor.
