Ross School's Visual Arts Department seeks a dynamic and collaborative teacher for a full-time or part-time position beginning in late August 2022. Based on the pedagogy of Ross School Spiral Curriculum and Learning System, the objectives of teaching at Ross School include tailoring each student's program to their individual needs, interests, and abilities; promoting independence and dependability; and enhancing students' social skills and sense of responsibility towards others.
This role is an Upper School position primarily based in the High School, involving mentoring capstone Senior Projects and integrating with the Ross School Art Academy. This position also involves developing curriculum and supporting individualized studio work with students. In addition, teaching some Middle School courses and supportive programming may be required.
At Ross, many of our faculty are practicing artists, and this position supports independent practice in addition to teaching. The curriculum welcomes new ideas, electives, and opportunities. An ideal candidate will be excited to innovate and learn alongside our students. It is essential for applicants to demonstrate a commitment to engage in pedagogical and curricular issues supporting an anti-racist and inclusive community.
Qualifications
- Active visual art specialty and practice
- BFA or BA required; Masters degree preferred
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience, primarily at the MS/HS levels
Candidates should also possess the following experience/qualities:
- Visual arts experience in 2D and 3D media (specialization in drawing, painting, or sculpture)
- Maker experience, metalworking, woodworking, and or design experience
- Experience in media, Photoshop, photography, film, or sound design
- A love for art history and passion for teaching art as a practice
- Art historical context and perspective
- Experience with project- and skill-based learning
- Interdisciplinary thinking
- Experience leading discussions and critiques focused on engagement and reflection
- A sense of humor and excellent communication skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Ross School offers a range of courses in multiple art studios, including but not limited to graphic design, architecture, drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, book arts, woodworking, metalworking, fashion design, art history, ceramics, and advanced art. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:
- Teach high school electives, including but not limited to Drawing, Advanced Drawing, Painting, and Portfolio Development. Courses are offered to students in grades 9–12 at beginner and advanced levels.
- Potential to teach integrated arts courses at the middle school level (grades 7–8).
- Join a team of artists teaching Visual Arts, developing a new art academy, and integrating with an existing STEAM program.
- Integrate with our Media Studies department (cinematography, sound design, acting, and editing).
- Support independent student work as part of our Advanced Visual Arts Program and Senior Projects.
- Collaboratively maintain and support school exhibitions.
- Engage with the school-wide community, activities, visiting artists, and the greater art community, with the possibility of leadership opportunities and curriculum development.
- Collaboratively maintain and support our shared classrooms, studios, and equipment.
- Perform duties related to extra afterschool help, art clubs, and boarding program support as needed or required.
- Promote the school and Visual Arts department.
