The Upper School, consisting of the Middle and High School, offers an exceptional, college-preparatory learning experience in a beautiful, state-of-the-art, guard-gated environment. Instructing core coursework, world languages, Focus Area electives (in TechBiz, Law and Policy, Biomedical Sciences, and Media Arts Communications), Jewish Studies, and athletics, The Adelson School develops students as scholar-athletes and A+ Human Beings. Job Summary:
The Upper School Teacher will design and implement educational curriculum in one or more academic or elective subjects appropriate for students in middle school or high school. The Upper School Teacher ensures a workplace environment consistent with the values and mission outlined by the Board of Trustees, Head of School and Leadership Team.
General Instructional Duties/Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a safe, productive, and engaging classroom or laboratory environment.
- Plan, implement and maintain records of curriculum lessons/units and associated assessments addressing content and evergreen skills.
- Ensure all curriculum, school, and state requirements are met.
- Use technology to improve lesson delivery and recordkeeping when appropriate.
- Update our school LMS daily/weekly with the required information, including daily attendance, graded assignments, and upcoming projects.
- Prepare students for formal and informal assessments.
- Grade assignments, exams, and other assessments, and communicate with parents, students, teachers, leadership, and counselors regarding underperformance and other concerns.
- Assess student needs and provide support or extra resources to struggling students as well as exceptional achievers.
- Communicate progress regularly to students and parents. Writes student comments for report cards at the end of the 1st and 3rd
- Communicate student needs and progress, to the appropriate person(s), e.g., the School Nurse, the Director of Learning Services, the School Counselor, the College Counselor, the Principal, and parents. Work with School Counselors and the Principal to fulfill role as a mandated reporter.
- Actively engages in the life of the School, including, but not limited to, participation in daily activities; occasional after school activities, such as dances, plays, and sporting events; and very occasional competitions, local trips, and travel/overnight trips.
- Expand teacher networks and participate in workshops, lectures, and other learning opportunities.
- Monitor and support student activities and behavior in all settings beyond the classroom: hallways, in the theater, in the lunchroom, on field trips, at gym events, during Kabbalat Shabbat service, etc.
- Full-time teachers are also responsible for mentoring a daily advisory cohort.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
Subject Matter Qualifications and Expectations:
- Ability to teach middle school and high school English courses (literature, grammar, and composition).
- Read all prescribed novels, poetry, and additional resources to gain a thorough understanding of them before developing lesson plans and curricula.
- Collaborate with other English department team members to develop lesson plans, teaching strategies, and interventions.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of the pedagogy and best practices of education.
- Desire to teach secondary (high) school-aged children and ability to adapt to their developmental status.
- The ability to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods such as flipped classrooms, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, applied problem-solving, and individual or collaborative projects and research.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage the classroom.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain partnership, professionalism, and tact in high-stress situations.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proactive, creative analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Google Classroom, G-Suite, Learning Management Systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and related software.
Education and Experience:
- Must have a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in English, English education, or related field, with multiple years of relevant teaching experience.
- Ongoing maintenance of all requirements regarding professional courses and in-services required.
- Specialized training in teaching secondary school-aged children, including certification and licensure, is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse school facility and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.
