Walden School is seeking a full-time Pre-K-6th grade Science teacher who is innovative, and supportive of the school's mission. The Walden School Science program supports a place-based pedagogy to promote children's curiosity for learning through indoor and outdoor exploration, real world application, play and inquiry. In addition, teachers collaborate with specialty and grade-level colleagues to plan interdisciplinary units in multi-age classrooms (K/1, 1/2, 2/3, 4/5, and a self-contained 6th Grade).
With a long-standing commitment to DEIJB, social justice pedagogy, social-emotional learning, and professional development, Walden is known for helping students become compassionate community members while developing the confidence to find their voice and advocate for themselves, others, and the earth.
This position is for the 2022-2023 school year. Candidates must be available to teach on campus.
Key responsibilities include the following:
- Developing new and adapting existing curricular units for the Pre-K-6th grade students.
- Overseeing and maintaining the campus garden as part of our 2nd and 3rd-grade urban sustainability initiative.
- Maintaining strong connections to nature, and cultivating a love of exploring the outdoors with children
- Working with the Outdoor Education Specialist and Director of Curriculum to connect Walden's excursions to Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, Catalina Island and the Jackson Hole, Wyoming to the science curriculum. (Trip attendance is not a requirement)
- Communicating about student progress: writing progress reports and holding parent conferences to keep student needs a priority.
- Maintaining an inspiring learning environment in our newly renovated science lab.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
- Prior elementary teaching experience (elementary, inquiry-based, cooperative/project-oriented, an experiential approach to learning)
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction and child development
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other teachers throughout all grade levels on campus to strengthen community and student experience
- Experience with an outdoor classroom, gardening, and earth stewardship in urban and rural settings
- Strong or curious commitment to progressive pedagogy
- Driven adult learner dedicated to their professional growth
- Sense of humor, high ethical professional standards, and an equity focused perspective
- Passion for working with children and the ability to be patient, understanding, and reflective
