Under the direction of the Controller, the HR Manager leads and directs the routine functions of the Human Resources (HR) department, including hiring and interviewing employees (as requested by the administration), administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing Pasadena Waldorf School (“School”) policies and practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. HUMAN RESOURCES:
- Partners with the leadership team to understand and execute the School’s human resource and talent strategy, particularly concerning current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, diversity strategies, and succession planning.
- Provides support and guidance to leadership, line management, and other employees when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise.
- Administers and executes routine tasks in delicate circumstances, such as providing reasonable accommodations, facilitating difficult conversations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations.
- Collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for new openings to create effective job descriptions
- Manages the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants, particularly for managerial, exempt, and professional roles.
- Analyzes trends in compensation and benefits; researches and proposes competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the School attracts and retains top talent.
- Creates learning and development programs in line with the School’s professional development goals and strategies, providing employees with internal development opportunities.
- Oversees employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
- Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommended best practices; reviews policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
- Maintains, updates, and serves as the School’s HR information system and talent management systems administrator.
LEADERSHIP:
- Manage team workloads to meet deadlines and achieve goals
- Help attract, hire, and retain team members, including developing and updating job descriptions, posting open supervised administrative positions, vetting, and interviewing potential candidates for employment, and onboarding new hires to ensure job and cultural acclimation
- Works with other parties in the School to periodically audit and update the strategies, materials, and policies of the School to promote progress toward our evolving strategic goals of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity
- Ensure diplomatic, timely, and clear communications in all school relationships
- Prepare schedules, department reports, and other organizational reports
- Develop and effectively manage department budgets and expense reports
- Provide necessary training and certifications
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or related field required.
- Knowledge of or commitment to understanding the unique philosophy and approach of Waldorf Schools as a mission-driven independent school movement
- 3+ years of human resource management experience preferred
- SPHR or SHRM-SCP credential is highly desired
- Previous experience working in a school environment preferred
- Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Experience developing and managing budgets
- Strong decision-making, action-planning, and prioritization skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (including Excel and Access), database experience, and other advanced computer skills
- Ability to be on-call outside regular working hours
