Lower School Early Childhood Creative Drama Teacher

Beginning August 25, 2022 Position: Lower School Early Childhood Creative Drama Teacher
Reports to: Lower School Division Head and Department Chair
FLSA: Exempt, full-time
The principal role of the Lower School Early Childhood Creative Drama teacher is to collaborate with the Performing Arts Team to create community and curriculum and to foster a love for drama and movement in a girls’ educational environment. The candidate should have pedagogical knowledge of the socio-emotional needs, as well as a commitment to the development of the whole child. The candidate will participate in the life of the School in ways beyond the specific job description and should be willing to collaborate with other faculty and staff on events which may take place on nights and weekends throughout the school year. This role requires excellent communication skills, creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work well within a collaborative environment.
Requirements:
- Experience in Theater Arts and Early Childhood Education, in particular a knowledge of Pre-K- Grade 1 curriculum
- Knowledge of child development, especially in connection with movement, drama, music, dance, art, and classroom management
- Bachelors Degree required; Masters Degree related to Education and/or Theater Arts strongly preferred
Preferred Skills and Expertise:
- Strong background in creative drama with at least three years experience teaching and directing children’s productions encompassing a wide knowledge of diverse resources
- Familiarity with New York State Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 1 learning standards
- A breadth of comprehension pertaining to movement, devised theatrical play, puppetry, and music
- Proficiency in the use of classroom and media technology: interactive SMART boards, learning management systems, Google Suite, iMovie, or similar
Responsibilities:
- Design curriculum and teach Creative Drama classes to students in Grades Pre-K, Junior K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1, as well as support in Grades 2-4 as needed
- Prepare students for annual productions, including Christmas and Spring performances
- Collaborate with colleagues to design, implement, and evaluate theater curricula in the Lower School and Preschool
- Commit to addressing social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-racist, anti-bias education in the curriculum through lessons, actions, and discussions
- Provide administrative support with room and rehearsal schedules
- Track and assess student progress by communicating with classroom teachers
- Provide information on individual student progress on twice-yearly report cards as well as twice-yearly conferences
- Perform assigned, ongoing scheduled responsibilities with care (roof duty, lunch duty, dismissal, etc.)
