The Buckley School, Los Angeles’ oldest K-12 co-educational learning institution, has an opening for a temporary Security Guard. The primary responsibilities of this position are to monitor traffic near campus and document violations of the school’s neighborhood driving policy by members of the Buckley community. Our Security Guards greet parents and students, direct traffic on campus and are often the first face-to-face contact someone has with the school. This position may be involved in these activities from time-to-time and as such this position is key to the image we present to our parents, students and the public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensure the safety and security of the school’s 22-acre campus, it’s physical plant and the students, employees, parents and guests on campus.
- Direct traffic on campus throughout the day.
RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
- Patrols buildings and grounds of the 22-acre campus.
- Examines doors, windows, gates to determine that they are secure.
- Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehends or expels persons engaging in suspicious criminal acts.
- Inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred.
- Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes and security doors left unlocked.
- Observes departing personnel to guard against theft of school property.
- Sounds alarm or calls police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons. Permits authorized persons to enter property.
- Records on a daily log sheet, patrol activities, sightings, any unusual occurrences with either staff, students or visitors.
- Reports unusual problems in equipment rooms, classrooms and offices.
- Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment for use of supervisory staff.
- Performs other duties as required such as turning on and off by-pass timers, switch lighting and HVAC controls during of-hours and off-day events.
- Patrols campus on foot.
- Interacts with faculty, students, staff and visitors on a regular basis. This requires the security guard to be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor at all times. Guards must be able to be assertive without being aggressive and at no time show hostile or violent behavior.
- Pick up and deliver mail.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
SKILLS / ABILITIES
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively and give verbal orders and/or directions to students, staff and visitors on campus.
- Ability to add and subtract 2-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
- Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Guard must maintain a valid California Guard Card and valid California Driver’s License.
