REPORTS TO: Director of Middle School
The Middle School Counselor is a full time, 12-month position providing direct, brief counseling services to students in grades 7 and 8. Aligned with the mission of the school, the Middle School Counselor forms impactful relationships with students, communicates closely with families, and collaborates with administration and faculty to support the overall wellness, social and academic success of students. Works in close collaboration with the administration, faculty and staff to develop, support, and enhance all aspects of the Middle School program
Key Responsibilities/Direct Services:
- Provide direct services through brief individual, group, and/or family counseling and consultation to help students cope with difficulties that might interfere with their learning (grades 7-8)
- Facilitate parent education groups approximately four times annually
- Lead social-emotional learning activities and lessons and collaborate with teacher sponsors of Student Council
- Emphasize the integration of growth mindset, values, self-awareness and self-advocacy throughout the Middle School program
- Collaborate with Lower School and Upper School Counselors to design and deliver transition activities preparing students for the next level Indirect Services:
- Coordinate Achievement Testing (NWEA MAP) for grades 7-8
- Monitor psycho-educational evaluation reports and remind families when it is time to get updated testing
- Consult with other Briarwood administrators, counselor, supervisors, or faculty to develop a plan of intervention for students who are struggling
- Collaborate with Director of Admissions when screening students considered at-risk, and support on-boarding of new students and families
- Supervise the completion of student recommendation and evaluation forms and facilitate the transition of students leaving Briarwood
- Plan in-service and faculty professional development activities in collaboration with Middle School Director
- Supports and attends school events and student activities
Professional Responsibilities:
- Maintains good standing as a licensed Texas mental health professional by completing all required continuing education requirements and adhering to the ASCA Code of Ethics.
- Model professionalism and confidentiality within the limits of the law and the counselor’s professional ethics guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and complete records and files, adhering to legal and ethical professional guidelines
- Other duties as assigned
Required:
- Texas Mental Health Professional License current and in good standing (LPC, LMFT, LCSW)
- Knowledgeable of legal and ethical standards pertaining to counseling and educational entities
- Familiarity with learning disabilities preferred
- Occasional weekend or evening work associated with special events
Specific Technology Skills Required: Google Suite
Education: Minimum of a master’s degree in Counseling or related field
