Student Support (School) Counselor, Middle and Upper School
Staff Position 2022-23 School Year, Full-time
The Roeper School is a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades Pre-K through twelve. We are seeking a full-time, in-person Student Support (School) Counselor for the Middle and Upper School (6th – 12th grade) Birmingham campus. We’re recruiting a Student Support (School) Counselor to use their Master’s Degree level education and expertise in mental health, learning and behavior to support students and help them succeed. The Student Support (School) Counselor will partner with faculty, staff, administrators, families, and students to provide a supportive and healthy learning environment. Assistance may include employing a variety of professional methods and/or making additional recommendations for external support. Responsibilities of the Student Support (School) Counselor include providing support and intervention to students and collaborating with individuals who are partners in the student’s education.
Student Support
- Provide support and intervention to students: assist in management of student behavior and social and emotional needs through consultation, communication and collaboration with administrators, teachers, families, and learning support professionals
- Meet with students on an as-needed basis as determined by the student, faculty, administration and/or staff
- Provide crisis prevention and intervention assistance both individually and as part of a school-wide crisis team
- Conduct classroom observations as requested in conjunction with Learning Support Coordinator
- Promote positive student behavior and mental health through improved coping skills, resilience, and problem-solving strategies
- Promote positive peer relationships through improved communication, social skills, conflict resolution, and anti-bullying strategies
- Develop strategies for students to aid in stress management related to academics, social and emotional challenges, motivation, and engagement
- Promote positive discipline and restorative practices
- Provide culturally responsive services to students and families from diverse backgrounds
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding school-related support for the student and student’s progress
- Advise and communicate with parents/guardians about the intersection of giftedness and psychological issues
- Fulfill Mandated Reporter responsibilities including reporting suspected abuse and/or neglect to external agencies including child protective services
- Provide external referral services for additional student support as needed; serve as a liaison to these services where necessary and appropriate
Collaborative Support of Students
- Maintain open and effective communication with faculty, administration, learning support services staff, parents, and students
- Collaborate with administration to implement and/or improve policies, practices and appropriate supports that are beneficial to student learning and mental health
- Work with faculty to encourage, implement, and maintain social-emotional learning (SEL) practices in classes and Advisory
- Work with Student Support Services Team to keep school-year accommodation list updated with narrative as pertains to psychological and/or social-emotional support and help communicate these accommodations to faculty and students where appropriate
- Collaborate with administration, faculty and other relevant staff to support students with SEL needs that may impact academic participation and/or performance, as well as facilitating re-entry after an extended school-initiated absence
- Assist Admissions Committee in interpretation of materials in order to help determine the ability of the school to meet the needs of prospective students
Professional Development
- Maintain current certification and/or necessary licensing, applicable memberships, and community contacts related to profession
- Assist in identifying training needs and opportunities for Professional Development for faculty and staff
- Provide professional development and training to faculty on mental health topics related to students including understanding of mental health and intersection with other areas e.g. giftedness and diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
Credentials:
- Demonstrated success in identifying and addressing needs of students including gifted learners
- Thoughtful, intelligent, articulate communicator
- Detailed and organized with caring demeanor
- High level of ethics and integrity
- Experience counseling middle and upper school students
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively to contribute and reach objectives
Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or equivalent
- Clinical professional license or MDE recognized School Counselor license, credential or endorsement
- Three or more years of counseling experience
- Three or more years of professional school related experience
