Position Description
Early Learning Center - Lead Teacher
Family Leave Replacement, Long Term Temporary Substitute
Phillips Brooks School (PBS) is seeking a lead teacher for its Early Learning Center. This is a long-term, temporary position to replace a lead teacher during her family leave. The position start and end dates are flexible for the right candidate with the range of beginning in mid-August or early September and continuing through January or February.
Reporting to the Assistant Head of School for Academics, the ELC Lead Teacher is responsible for creating a rich and intentional environment that fosters the growth of the whole child. The position’s hours are from 8 AM - 4 PM.

Key Responsibilities
The teacher oversees the ELC curriculum, the learning environment, student development, and family partnerships. Furthermore, the teacher is attuned to the specific learning needs and social and emotional development of each student. As a lead ELC teacher, a dedication to creating safe spaces for children to take emotional and academic risks to help them develop their confidence and positive self-esteem is essential. The teacher is also responsible for:
- Teaching an intentional social–emotional learning curriculum.
- Establishing an academic environment with clear, consistent routines and expectations to promote student autonomy and engagement.
- Fostering positive family relationships through a variety of communication pathways, including parent-teacher conferences and narrative progress reports.
- Ensuring the safety of each student by supervising and engaging in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor learning activities.
- Providing differentiated learning experiences for students 3-5 years old.
- Collaborating with ELC teaching teams on student support strategies based on observations of students.
- Bringing heart, dedication, collaboration, passion, and humor to our vibrant learning community.
Key Qualifications and Background
The successful candidate must love working with early childhood aged children, possess a nurturing teaching style, and be comfortable communicating with parents. The position requires an undergraduate degree and 12 hours of ECE credits. Preferred qualifications include experience teaching in an early learning center, a demonstrated understanding of Reggio or play based early childhood curricula.
