As the School Counselor, this individual will work with students to help develop a plan to navigate life’s daily challenges, respond to situations, and refer out when indicated. To achieve this, the School Counselor meets students on an individual basis, as well as in a group setting, while also collaborating closely with the School Nurse, the Dean of Students, and the Head of School when appropriate.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Serves as the main mental wellness liaison for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and outside clinicians
- Meets regularly with the Head of School and other members of faculty to communicate student progress and/or concerns
- Provide one-on-one brief counseling to students scheduled and drop-in.
- Work with the student’s family to refer the student to outside mental health provider, if necessary.
- Act as a liaison between the mental health provider and the student’s immediate team to coordinate how to best support the student of West Nottingham Academy.
- Attend “Students of Concern” meeting when necessary.
- Preserve confidentiality for students and families on mental health issues.
- Provide crisis intervention and assessment as needed.
- Actively engage and support the School’s commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community as defined by the School’s Diversity Statement and strategic plans and initiatives.
- Live on or near campus.
- Be on call during some evenings and weekends.
- Adhere to and assist in enforcing all School policies and procedures.
- Promote the mission of the School.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional Mental Health/Counseling or School Counseling Degree.
- Maryland licensed school counselor (preferred).
- Professional mental health license.
- Experience working in a high school environment.
- Willingness to work within a boarding school schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work with a dynamic and engaging staff and school community.
- Ability to effectively listen, respond, and present information to students, parents, faculty and staff.
- Ability to take initiative and demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain sensitive information in the strictest of confidence, exercising absolute discretion and professionalism.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
- Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills.
