Merion Mercy Academy, an independent Catholic college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12 outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, seeks a part time school nurse committed to providing a safe and healthy environment where students can learn and grow.
As a licensed registered nurse, the school nurse is responsible for the quality of care delivered while maintaining current licensure and certifications. The school nurse handles acute medical issues, assists with health screenings, monitors records, administers medications, and promotes wellness in accordance with Merion Mercy’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment. In addition, the school nurse works with the Head of School and staff to integrate the Catholic faith and culture and infuse the Mercy charism into the school’s entire program.
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, the school nurse’s duties include but are not limited to:
- Assists the school administration in planning and organizing the school health program and shall encourage parents/caregivers to have the required medical examinations done by their family physicians as well as health records in accordance with MMA policies.
- Follows criteria for ensuring safe and effective practice as dictated by standards of practice and professional codes of behavior of the Pennsylvania State Nursing Board.
- Identifies goals and plans for nursing care at MMA and evaluates effectiveness of nursing care provided.
- Collaborates and assists with a Certified School Nurse of Lower Merion School District to obtain state mandated health records. The nurse informs and coordinates care of students’ health issues at MMA with the C.S.N. as needed.
- Responsible for all actions as a licensed registered nurse and is accountable to clients for the quality of care delivered while maintaining current licensure and certifications.
Serves as a Resource:
- Acts as a resource for faculty, counseling department, staff, parents/caregivers and students on such health related issues providing current information as they relate to health and well being of the students.
- Serves as the students’ advocate.
- Serves as liaison among parents/caregivers, physicians, community agencies, and support groups to provide medical care and assistance to families and students in need.
- Collaborates as a member of the Student Support Team, the Safety Committee, and the Concussion Group.
Addresses acute situations
- Provides specialized health care and services to all students.
- Responds to urgent and emergency incidents according to Pennsylvania Standards of Nursing Practice Guidelines.
- Administers medications.
Monitors students
- Provides individual health counseling to service emotional and physical health needs.
- Evaluates and monitors communicable diseases and implements strategies to prevent the spread of disease in the school.
Promotes wellness
- Provides educational and promotional activities for the future healthy lifestyles of our students.
- Participates in the advisory system as needed regarding health related issues.
- Assists the Head of School and Assistant Head of School as needed.
Maintains Nurse’s Office and Infirmary
- Maintains nursing office and infirmary inventory for student health care needs, anticipating needs and informing the Director of Operations as necessary.
- Obtains emergency medications and supplies from parents/students according to physician plan of care for students at school – and develops emergency care plans accordingly.
- Maintains accessibility to students, faculty, and staff throughout the school day.
- Documents student health center visits and updates information in Magnus Health information system.
- Maintains confidentiality of students, records, and health room visits.
- Prepares emergency travel bags for faculty/staff accompanying students on field trips. Reviews health care concerns with faculty/staff prior to trips.
- Checks and refreshes contents of school emergency kit used during fire drills.

Position Requirements
- R.N. (Registered Nurse)
- B.S.N.(Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Preferred
- A minimum of three years experience as a school nurse is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Magnus Health software is a plus.
