POSITION OVERVIEW:
CSS is seeking an innovative and creative educator with a broad skill set in teaching Physical Science and Biology. The strongest candidate will have experience working with middle school students, be successful at employing experiential learning strategies in and outside of the classroom, and will be excited to use our established, organic garden as a tool for teaching and learning. A successful candidate will work with an amazing team of PreK-12th grade teachers and school leaders to inspire and build a passion for inquiry, scientific discovery, and written documentation in our outstanding students.
This position reports directly to the Middle School Director and will have a variety of responsibilities related to delivering the school program. These include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following areas:
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead student learning in middle school sciences through an ongoing cycle of planning, instruction, and timely student feedback
- Support students’ emotional and academic development as an Advisor
- Coordinate with Lower School teachers and the science department chair for curriculum alignment across divisions
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partner with colleagues and school leaders to create an engaging, dynamic learning environment
- Co-lead experiential and outdoor education seminars
- Support the school in the ongoing development of a rigorous academic curriculum that inspires student engagement through project-based learning, hands-on experimentation and iteration, and other active approaches to learning
- Take a student-centered approach by providing responsive instruction, including differentiation and flexibility to adjust plans based on student needs
- Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning and growth
- Stay up-to-date on current science instruction methods and adolescent brain research through professional development and partnership with appropriate agencies and groups
- Support extracurricular activities through sponsoring clubs or coaching sports, involvement in after-school student activities, and chaperoning student events
- Participate constructively and collaboratively in professional development, and both grade level and department meetings, in the spirit of continuous growth for the school and its programs
- Maintain a safe, comfortable, and engaging classroom environment
- Communicate with parents in an appropriate and timely manner
- Seek support from colleagues and school leaders when questions arise
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS | PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- A Bachelor's or advanced degree (preferred) in sciences or related fields
- The ability to effectively plan and support project-based learning and student choice in demonstrating their knowledge
- Knowledge of science pedagogy and the ability to backward plan lessons from Next Generation Science Standards

- Is a team player who is willing to work collaboratively and constructively with the science department, cross-divisional colleagues, and our amazing and diverse families

- Is attentive and predictive about details and conditions as they pertain to student safety and whereabouts on our 26 acre campus
- Enjoys building authentic, supportive relationships with students and their families

SALARY RANGE:
$30,000 - $50,000 annually based upon skills and experience.
