Vocal Music Teacher, Middle and Upper School
Faculty Position 2022-23 School Year, Full-time
The Roeper School is a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades Pre-K through twelve. We are seeking a full-time Vocal Teacher for the Middle and Upper School (Grades 6 – 12) to join our Birmingham campus faculty for the upcoming school year.
A Roeper music teacher is an expert in their field who collaborates with colleagues to develop and enhance a vocal music curriculum tailored to gifted, independent thinkers. Candidates should value inquiry as a way of knowing and learning, and candidates must be comfortable in classrooms where students are treated with respect and all voices are considered and honored. Position Description:
- Teach and lead performances and differentiate instruction for multiple choirs of students in middle and upper school
- Teach varied middle and upper school music electives including introductory composition
- Serve as the Musical Director for approximately two musicals each year
- Supervise vocal rehearsals for all vocal music events, held periodically throughout the school year
- Facilitate the social and emotional development of the students and nurture their development with care and consideration of each student holistically
- Embrace and implement a multicultural and culturally relevant curriculum, in accordance with Roeper’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Implement the school’s philosophy in classroom instruction and daily interactions with students and colleagues
- Share student progress with parents through communication including conferences and narrative reports
- Maintain effective communication with students, parents, teachers, colleagues, and administration
- Serve as faculty advisor or co-advisor to a Middle or Upper School homeroom
- Collaborate with Middle and Upper School faculty on school-wide initiatives
- Support the educational mission of the school through varied activities, including faculty meeting attendance, committee participation, events, and field trips.
Credentials:
The preferred candidate will have:
- Experience teaching vocal music and guiding middle/upper school students through performances
- Experience working on musical theater productions
- Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners
- Excellent instructional and communication skills
- Piano competency is preferred
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in Music, Music Education, Education or other relevant field is required, a Master’s Degree is preferred. Three to five years of teaching experience is preferred.
