Virgin Islands Montessori School & Peter Gruber International Academy (VIMSIA) is a Montessori/IB school with approximately 320 students (toddler through 12th grade) on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean. We are a non-profit, independent, private, international school that is looking for quality teachers who have a passion for teaching. Our Montessori school has been proudly serving our St. Thomas community for nearly 60 years. With trained, dedicated educators (some with decades of experience), we provide an authentic Montessori experience to a diverse community that has guided generations of families from Toddler classroom through to High School. Our tri-accreditation of Association Montessori International (AMI), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Middle States Association (MSA) leads our students through a dual high school diploma and an academic continuum that focuses on the acquisition of both strong academic and life skills.

The learning specialist will:
- Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic difficulties and assess their learning strengths and challenges.
- Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support students with different learning styles and teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs.
- Collaborate weekly with Learning Support Team (Emotional Support and Montessori Director) to establish student support plan.
- Participate in the admissions process to ensure incoming students can be accommodated by our program.
- Utilize the Response to Intervention approach to identify struggling students
- Provide learning support resources and tools for the classroom and coaching to teachers for implementation.
- Direct one-on-one or small-group instruction.
- Develop and write student accommodation/learning plans with long-term goals and specific objectives.
- Provide student-progress reports to the school and parents with assessment results and recommendations of diagnostic testing and remedial programs for learning-related issues.
- Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments.
- Initiate and schedule parent conferences as needed.
- Recommend in-school and community resources for identified students.
- Work with professionals outside the school to support students.
- Coordinate and facilitate communication between student, family, school, and other involved professionals regarding student learning plan.
- Secure standardized testing accommodations for qualifying students.
- Network with learning specialists at other independent schools.
- Pursue professional development opportunities.
- Attend conferences and professional meetings in order to remain current with industry trends.
- Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from your area of expertise.
- Be involved in the school community at large.
- Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the Head of School.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field; graduate degree preferred
- 3+ years of teaching experience
- Knowledge of learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, reports, and assistive technology
- Knowledge of administering and interpreting assessments and test results, academic achievement, and diagnostic testing
- Proven success as a leader in program development
- Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum
- Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Strong networking skills to ensure access to resources in the broader community
